Apple Could Refresh iMac Line at Oct. 23 Event

Updated retail SKUs hint at Apple's plans to announce new iMacs at next Tuesday's iPad mini event.
by Jon Fox
October 16, 2012

Apple is likely to announce its down-sized iPad at an event on October 23rd (and we'll have live coverage). But the iPad mini probably won't be the only ace up Apple's sleeve: reports have suggested that Apple could update the Mac mini and/or release a 13-inch version of its Retina MacBook Pro, and probably the strongest rumor at this point is of an update to its iMac line of all-in-one desktop PCs.

The leaked retail SKUs, which list the models as "D7" and "D8" appear consistent with Apple's retail offerings for the 21- and 27-inch iMacs.
Better internal specifications are pretty much a given, but we wouldn't be surprised to see an external redesign: it's been a few years without any major external changes.
So far, rumors suggest a thinner, less square redesign. Some reports have it looking "like a water droplet" - presumably referring to rounded edges instead of right-angled corners.
What are you hoping to see from Apple's event on October 23rd? Let us know in the comments.

a Mac Mini would be just fine but i have not kept up with the current specs

they really need a mid priced tower

just feeding the hackintosh market by not having one

I want a new iMac, but I'd rather have a new (smaller) MacPro.

The only decently priced Mac product I've seen and would ever buy would be an Apple TV ... then I'd Hack it and put XBMC on it. I wonder if it would make a decent alternative to a Mac Mini. I'm not sure if you could put the full IOS desktop on it, maybe the Ipad.

My chick just dropped a bunch of cash at Best Buy... she got a new 13" Mac Air and a 64 GB Ipad... she finds the Mac Air "lighter" then the Ipad...

the apple TV isn't powerful enough to run OS X. I have one, the ATV2, and have XBMC on it but it crashes often. not sure if the ATV3 is any more powerful. actually it is since it runs 1080p and mine is only 720p.

the mac mini is a good unit if all you need is a box and don't want any expansion and will run XBMC really nice but that would be quite a bit of money just for a tv box

New iPad Mini starts at $329, is thinner than a pencil

"This isn't just a shrunken down iPad," Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said as he showed off the all new iPad Mini during Apple's media event on Tuesday. "It's an entirely new design."

The iPad Mini is 7.2 millimeters thin (that's about as thin as a pencil). It weights 0.68 pounds, which is as light as a standard pad of paper. These measurements make the iPad Mini 23 percent thinner and 53 percent lighter than the third-generation iPad. The tablet is a 7.9-inch device with a 1024 × 768 pixel resolution. "Easy to remember. 7.9, 9.7," Schiller said, contrasting the measurements of the iPad Mini and the regular iPad.

There's a dual-core A5 chip, a FaceTime HD camera in the front, a 5MP iSight camera in the back, a Lightning connector, and all the usual iPad guts, of course. From the sounds of it, the iPad Mini contains the power of the iPad 2, with some slight upgrades (and a much smaller body). According to Schiller, the iPad Mini has a 10-hour battery life, which is about on par with the battery life Google advertises for the Nexus 7.

Schiller took several jabs at Google's popular 7-inch tablet, ouf course, pointing out that — unlike the Nexus 7 — the iPad Mini has over 275,000 apps specifically designed for tablets available to it, rather than a bunch of scaled-up phone apps.

"We took the time to create a product that was a concentration of, but not a reduction of, the original product," Apple's senior vice president of industrial Design, Jony Ive, pointed out in a video shown during the media event.

Like the iPad, the iPad Mini has a line of accessories such as Apple's Smart Covers, naturally. "It is every inch an iPad," a commercial shown during the event emphasized.

The iPad Mini starts at $329 for a 16GB Wi-Fi-only model. 32Gb and 64 GB Wi-Fi-only models are available for $429 and $529, respectively, while their LTE-capable counterparts are priced at $459, $559, and $659, for the 16GB, 32GB, and 63GB versions, respectively.

Pre-orders start on Oct. 26. The Wi-Fi-only models will ship a week later, on Nov. 2. The LTE-enabled models will ship about two weeks later.

I like that they're updating the regular iPad already.

The new iMacs look nice but I'm unsure whether it would be a better investment to try to migrate to Adobe Lightroom on Win 7 instead.

An Apple fanboy friend of mine just HAS to have the new iPad Mini so I'm getting his one month old Nexus Tablet for $150. Win-win.

I'll definitely be interested in what you think of it. I'm considering buying a $400 tablet (Asus Transformer tf300) but not sure if I'll be just as happy with a cheaper tablet like the Nexus.

That is what is stopping me... as I have that Adobe designer suite thing... really don't want to rebuy it.

Jealous. Though I just installed Jelly Bean on my Kindle so that should keep me satisfied from a tablet prospective for a while.

i have the 16gb i got for $300 with a friends employee discount and some other offer and i think its a sweet ass lil machine. the only issue i have with it is the headphone volume wasnt high enough when i was watching movies while riding in the work truck while the other guys were listening to espen for 8 hours, but on a 2 hour flight it was just fine.

Cool, good to know. I went and messed around with that Asus at Sears yesterday and really like it, but $400 is a little steep. I think I'm going to wait until around Thanksgiving and see what kind of deals pop up for both that one and the Nexus tablets.

Oh I misread your post, so you went with one of the Transformers? The tf300?

Can't wait to see what Google has coming out next week. The rumored Nexus 10 looks like it's going to be pretty sweet.
