Announced today:
Sony's never been that great about keeping redesigned video game hardware a secret, so it's no surprise that the much rumored PlayStation 3 model debuted this evening at Tokyo Game Show.

Sleeker and slimmer, the new PS3 comes in "charcoal black," but Japan gets the super-special "classic white" option. Sony says that the internal volume and weight of the new PS3 is less than half of the original system. It's 20 percent and 25 percent less volume/weight compared to the current PS3 Slim.

Different regions will see different versions of the systems along with different prices.

North America

250GB - $269 (Uncharted 3/Dust 514 Bundle) - September 25th
500GB - $299 - October 30th

Europe and PAL Territories

Flash Memory 12GB - 229 Euros, AUD $299.95, NZD $399.95 - October 12th (September 27th AU, October 18th NZ)
500GB - 299 Euros, AUD $399.95, NZD $519.95 - September 28th (September 27th ANZ)

Japan

250GB - 24,900 Yen - October 4th
500GB - 29,800 Yen - October 4th

What's that Uncharted 3/Dust 514 bundle all about? Well, you get Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and a voucher for more than $30 worth of bonus content for Dust 514.

My 2008 model died almost exactly a year ago (yellow light of death). Replaced it with a slim model last year; hope this one doesn't kick the bucket any time soon.
Warning; do a system backup on your PS3 to an external HD from time to time! If your PS3 dies, you can't get your files from it to put onto the new one.

Isn't this the fourth iteration of the system they've put out? I'm kinda surprised that people are still buying them new. It's been out for almost 6 years. I could understand have a new design when they have a new console because people will buy the old one for cheaper games, but it seems odd that there is enough of a demand to warrant a redesign. I'm sure the production costs are cheaper, but why make a big deal out of it if that's the only reason to do it. Just put them out.

They are nearing the end of the console cycle. There will be a gap where quite a few people cannot afford the new system but PS3's will be dying. They probably have another 2 good years on this thing before they stop production.

Remember how long they made PS2's?

When the Sega Genesis came out, Atari continued to manufacturer and sell the 2600

I understand that they have remodeled all of their previous systems, they find cheaper ways to manufacture it so more people buy them new with a lower price-point, but it seems like they've been doing it every 18 months with the PS3.

This seems topical:

Sony to Support PS3 Until at Least 2015

The company's VP of hardware marketing has promised a number of undisclosed first-party games over the next three years.
Sony's VP of hardware marketing John Koller has revealed the company will continue to support the PS3 until at least 2015 with a range of first-party content. "A lot of great content is coming," Koller suggested, continuing, "And over the next 2-3 years, the PS3 has got an incredible lineup."
In an interview with Gamespot, Koller also said "We're going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely. And we're going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that's running hot. And I can tell you right now, the development spigot for PS3 is very hot. A lot of great games coming."
Quite what these games may be remains a mystery, especially extending so far into the future, but it's interesting to ponder what this means in relation to when the PS4 will be released. It seems pretty likely that there's going to be some overlap between the PS3 and PS4 in terms of support, the question is for just how long?
Let the speculation begin!

I'm still thinking the next-gen launches will be announced E3 of next year and released about 2 years from now.
