It is amazing how little Obama is being connected to his administration's deeds. Fast and Furious... chirp chirp... Raiding cannabis dispensaries... chirp chirp...

Eric Holder should be in prison for the rest of his life.

I imagine that the DEA and ATF are feeling pretty threatened by the idea of legal pot.

Exactly, Holder doesn't want to legalize his way out of a job.

The government in general would feel threatened, they get most of their nanny state laws by using fear, illegal drugs causes crime just like prohibition. The cartels and the CIA would also lose a lot of money, if drugs became legal the prices of drugs would plummet. The private prisons that make money depending on how many people are inside would also be threatened.

Kirk nailed it. There is a not so secret underground economy that makes a lot of money from the distribution of marijuana. The other policies involved with illegal drugs would have a significant amount of their power undercut by legal weed.

I'm reminded of what I thought was the hilarious ranting of a pot head - "pot promotes peace, and peace is bad for business, maaaaaaannnnn!". He actually said that in the back of my patrol car and I laughed my ass off. Now I realize that he was mostly right. Outside of catching somebody for possession I have never arrested somebody under the influence of THC because they were violent. On a good holiday weekend I will respond to a dozen calls for violent behavior due to alcohol consumption. I've also seen the meat grinder running full tilt because of drunk drivers.

How did your keyboard not explode when you finished typing that sequence of letters?

    You're a good cop, sir.

That's bullshit. It's been pretty legal in California for a while now and weed is still about $15-$20 a gram at the dispensaries.

Step away from the Diet Coke sir.

And it's totally fair for Cali to be doing that. They legalized it so that it would bring money in, so they tax the shit out of it. It's only fair that it adds up to that.

    edit: I'm a redundant ass.

I don't know what the tax rate is, but the dispensaries aren't supposed to make a profit.

I'm talking complete legality. Alcohol became very expensive during prohibition, guitars that are made of wood that the government banned can be worth a fortune. And I'm sure the price of an AR went up after the Clinton ban.

Marijuana actually has a markup of up to 600% wholesale, counting labor, so with legalization you'd see dedicated, specialized facilities and increased competition which would drastically reduce the price, even if it was taxed to hell.

    This.

The reason you are seeing equal to street price now is because of supply/demand, added taxes, and the price is fair as an alternative to getting it from criminals. Full-on legalization would allow for businesses to pop up and create some competition. Of course there is always the chance that you'll get government-regulated schwoogie-shwag cigarettes, and still have to pay top price for the good stuff. Kind of like the difference between a bottle of J&B and a Glenlivet.

You already see that with the dispensaries. I think the reason the price is still high is because people still see it as a fair price. What other drug can you get a roomful of people high for 20 bucks?
