Okay baggers, let's see if all these big brains can be of any use here... I have a Sentry safe, model R3786, SN#557224, no keypad combo, just a dial. I don't know the combo, and don't really want to go through the hassle of trying to prove to Sentry Group that I do, in fact, now own this safe. Anyone here adept at figuring out the default combo for these mama jammas?

I don't know how to do it, but I'd love to have that challenge just sitting around the house for free.
BTW, your post is the sixth result for google search of 'R3786 sentry'.

Buy a cheap stethoscope on ebay and play.

That was my thought as well when I was looking at this place and saw that safe. I was mentally rubbing my grubby little paws together thinking "someday, it's gonna be you and me, my locked friend"... now I'm just wanting to see what, if anything, is inside it.

I'd also like to be able to use the safe once it's open.

Perhaps try to contact the previous tenant and see if they have the combo so that you can use the safe? If not put an ad on CL for a safe cracker.

Nah, the dude took a powder, and the guy I bought the place from doesn't know the combo.

What a great way to sell a house, find a safe someone wants to get rid of and put it in the cellar to add intrigue.

Anyways, inspect every square inch of the safe and scour the surrounding area looking for numbers, there's a good chance someone wrote the combination somewhere.

Stethoscopes work, but being an a/v guy you can rig a set-up using a mic and sound system. Spin the dial until you hear a heavy click, then go the other way till it clicks, etc. With a little practice you should get it fairly quickly.

If you can't do it that way, circular saw with a diamond blade should work too.

I bet having a mystery safe in your new house sounds way more awesome than it actually is. I really hope there's something awesome in there, but, my bet is on either nothing or some useless papers and shit

Personally, hoping for cool bearer bonds or stock shares. :)

Of course, it's probably vintage sex toys.

if you do try this keep in mind that most of these safes aren't like masterlocks, its not just one turn in each direction, it's 3 or 4 numbers and it goes like this:
starting at zero turn left 4 times to the first number, right 3 times to the 2nd number, left 2 times to the 3rd number and if there's a 4th its right 1 turn to that number

I'd call the IRS to see if the previous owner owed any taxes. Because if there is money in there you wouldn't want to cheat the government out of their cheddar. Michelle Obama is likely planning her next vacation and she's going to need shoes.

Why call the previous owner? Just report the cash in the safe as income and pay tax on it.
