A Family's Nightmare: Accident Photos of Their Beautiful Daughter Released

Nicole "Nikki" Catsouras was killed in a car accident on Halloween last year. Gruesome photos of the accident scene have spread around the internet, and people have e-mailed the images to Catsouras' family. Her family is suing the California Highway Patrol for allegedly releasing the accident photos.
The parents aren't doing a good job of getting those pictures taken off the interwebs. A link one of you sick fuckers posted 10 months ago still has the pictures up. :yuck2:

Yeah. We do too much to protect kids from the reality of life.

I saw pics of brain splattered people years ago and it definitely
made me think twice about doing stupid shit.

I’m guessing that wherever these pictures are showing up at the intention is not to warn teenagers of the dangers associated with driving but rather for the voyeurs who enjoy this sort of thing.

I can definitely see the family’s point of view in this. Not only did these lose their daughter (I can't imaging what type of hell that would be) but then they have to deal with people getting their rocks off by looking at what is left of her dead body.

Nikki's three younger sisters were forbidden to use the Internet...
Yeah... go ahead and buy a Porsche for your 18-year-old, but whatever you do, don't let your kids surf the web... it's far too dangerous!

Fuck em, anything that the cops report on and photos that they take are public record. You can request any of that shit if you want.

Maybe their daughter shouldn't have been such a stupid fucking driver.

The car was her father's, and she took it without permission. Having said that, it's beyond me why these dopes didn't just change their email addresses using fake names and only give them out to their closest trusted friends and family. I never even heard about these photos - I don't think it'd be very hard to avoid them while surfing teh interwebs.

I was thinking the very same thing ... but that would be too easy and would mean they'd have to lose their more than 15 minutes in the spotlight.

UPDATE

Family Can Sue Highway Patrol Over Photos
By AVERY FELLOW

SANTA ANA, Calif. (CN) - Two California Highway Patrol officers who emailed gruesome photos of a decapitated 18-year-old accident victim to their friends on Halloween, "for pure shock value," must answer to claims brought by the victim's family after the images "were strewn about the Internet and spit back at family members, accompanied by hateful messages," a California appeals court ruled.
Justice Richard Aronson revived the family's privacy claims and chided the officers for their allegedly "morally deficient" behavior.
Officers Thomas O'Donnell and Aaron Reich emailed nine photos of Nikki Catsouras to their families and friends on Halloween night, and photos started "popping up in thousands of Web sites" across the United States and the United Kingdom, the ruling states.
The morbid photos were then "spit back" at the victim's family with taunts about their daughter. Catsouras' father, Christos Catsouras, received disturbing emails, including one entitled "Woo Hoo Daddy" that said, "Hey Daddy I'm still alive."
"[F]amily members have a common law privacy right in the death images of a decedent," Justice Aronson ruled, overturning the lower court's decisions sustaining the officers' demurrers and dismissing the case. Though California law doesn't bar the media from discussing or portraying the life of a decedent, it does protect death images, the 4th District Court of Appeal ruled.
The Catsouras family had accused the officers of causing them emotional distress intentionally and with reckless disregard. Those accusations were enough to sustain the action, Justice Aronson ruled.
The court also allowed the family's negligence claims, ruling that the officers and the department had a duty of care not to put accident photos on the Internet.
Aronson said the alleged actions were "morally deficient," and said he hoped the ruling would protect families from such abuses in the future.
"We rely upon the CHP to protect and serve the public," Aronson wrote. "It is antithetical to that expectation for the CHP to inflict harm upon us by making the ravaged remains of our loved ones the subjects of Internet sensationalism. It is important to prevent future harm to other families by encouraging the CHP to establish and enforce policies to preclude its officers from engaging in such acts ever again."

A couple of the very few things I actually remember from a high school class were the photos we saw in Drivers Ed. One was of a guy that didn't have his seatbelt on and was thrown out of his truck, right before it rolled over his head. Another was of a kid that opened his mouth to scream right before rear-ending a semi truck. The steering wheel nearly cut his head off Joker-style.

Do they even still teach drivers' ed? I thought they got rid of it for sensitivity training or climate change 101.
Now parents pay out the ass for driving school. My father did when I came of age and I remember one day the instuctors telling us that if you ever find yourself in a position where you are running from cops that it is stupid to do it in the car and that your best chance was to stop and flee on foot.

We were on of his last classes before he was fired.
