Sadly, I had to have the runt of the litter euthanized tonight.
He was the runt of the litter and ate like a champ until about 5pm.
He started pooping blood and not eating and very lethargic.
Took him to an emergency vet hospital when they opened at 8pm and nothing could be done except put it out of misery.
Only knew him for 53 hours but am bawling my eyes out

I'm mad and upset

Dozer (the saint bernard) attacked and bit my girlfriend's daughter. Sent her to the hospital with several wounds on the side of her head. The humane society has classified him as a dangerous animal and wants me to have him put down. I've asked around to trainers that might be able to curb and reverse whatever aggression he has, and they've basically told me that they could turn him into a docile pet but they can't do anything to guarantee he won't be triggered again and recommend that no matter what, he be kenneled and muzzled any time guests are around. They also told me that it's probably my fault because I spoil him so much...full run of the house, never has to wait for food, etc. He's made himself the protector of the domicile and treats everyone with suspicion. The attack was unprovoked, she had visited a few times and we normally kept them separated because Dozer would jump and bark at her and she was intimidated by him. It just sucks, he is such a good dog for me, loyal and mostly obedient. And outside of the house he wouldn't hurt a flea. He loves attention from strangers when he's on a leash. But between the fact that he may attack again and that the county wants him put down, I'm probably going to have to make an awful decision.

Just torn up about the whole thing......

I'm very fortunate that our shelter-found pit mix has turned out to be a total pussycat (unless provoked by a dog not being controlled by it's owner). But I went in with the understanding if she ever turned out to be an unprovoked attacker - she was getting put down. 1] I won't take on the responsibility of letting someone get harmed because I "hoped" it wouldn't happen again. 2] I believe it is never the dogs fault, it's just the way they are sometimes - just like people. 3] All dogs go to heaven and I feel it's better for all concerned to take that shitty step and do what I feel has to be done.

I really am sorry for your predicament, I hope you're able to resolve it in some way and find peace.

It’s pretty uncharacteristic for a St. Bernard to be human aggressive, is it a mix?

Is there any rescue that might take him? That's a fucked up situation, I've had to put some dogs down but it was always because they were sick and I felt I was doing the right thing. Not sure how I'd feel about doing it in your circumstance. Whatever you do don't make any decisions when you're pissed and sad, look around for some options and then decide. Good luck man.

All of the rescues around here won't touch a biter. They don't want to accept the liability of a "violent dog".

Nope, purebred and pedigreed. It just boils down to him assigning himself the role of protector of the house because I spoiled him so much. She gave me good tips for next time but said he can't really be trusted anymore.

Plus the bite was more violent due to his size. 150# dog chomping on your head will do damage no matter what

What? Not Dozer.

I hope you don't have your mind made up already. I would get rid of my girlfriend and her daughter and anyone else before putting my dog down. Changes will have to be made but it can be done. Don't put him down.

Just my opinion.

I had a dog I rescued that bit. I took the dog to a behavior specialist, basically a dog head shrinker. He did a great job with him and me to deal with it so I could keep him and not have any repeat incidences.

If he dumps the girlfriend she will likely make him put the dog down out of spite. And if he puts the dog down because of this their relationship is fucking doomed. You don’t recover from “if I’d never met you and your stupid kid my dog would still be alive.”

So no matter what he does the dog is going down and so is his relationship.

That really sucks. Sorry, Mayr...

My wife came in on the side of “dump the girlfriend if that makes it possible to keep the dog.”

As it stands right now, Animal Control is recommending euthanasia due to "the severity of the bite". I have a court hearing in a few weeks where I could plead my case, but regardless, he already has that stigma attached. A judge may let me keep him with qualifications, but if there's ever another incident (girlfriend or no) then the bite is a felony charge. Just the world we live in.

The part that I am having the hardest time wrapping my head around, is that this all stems from the fact that I spoiled my dog too much. Who would have thought that making your dog want for nothing is actually bad for him, especially if he has an Alpha personality. So I blame myself most of all for being a shitty owner, by trying to be an awesome owner. I learned a lot for next time, for sure.

If you think spoiling kids is bad, why would the same not be true for a dog?

We spoil the ever loving shit out of our dog and he wouldn’t hurt anyone, provided we welcome them into the house. Someone tries to break in or come into our backyard its fucking go time. Unless you have a ball. Then you can steal all our shit and murder us as long as you throw the ball a few times while you do it.

So it’s not about the spoiling, it’s about the first few times you introduced her to the dog.

That's such a chick response.
If I wasn't asexual, I would immediately break up with you if you pulled that crap.

I don't doubt you spoil the shit out of him, but I guarantee you and Mrs. P lay down plenty of boundaries too. Has to be done.

We had a Lhasa Apso when I was a kid that came 1\8" from taking my eye out with a face bite. The dog knew right away he had fucked up, and was shaking and seemed apologetic. I still feel like shit today that my parents put him down. I also wonder how much pussy I could have scored if he had got me and I had a cool as fuck glass eye for the rest of my life.

It’s the kids fault, it’s always the kids fault, and the girlfriend because she never taught the kid how to interact with a dog
