Pregnant woman tased for resisting arrest in Walgreens parking lot

CHICAGO (FOX Chicago News) -
A pregnant woman was tasered by Chicago police during a dispute over a parking ticket Tuesday night.

The incident took place in the parking lot of a Roseland Walgreens, at 103rd and Michigan Ave.

Tiffany Rent – who is not handicapped, but is eight months pregnant - was ticketed for parking in a handicapped spot. She tore up the ticket, threw it at the officer and tried to take off, according to police.

The officer tasered Rent, 30, to subdue her. Her family told the Chicago Tribune she was still seated in her vehicle when the taser was used.

"She is eight months pregnant, that is no reason to use excessive force," said Rent's mother, Tonie. "He knew she was pregnant when he tased her."

Rent's fiance Joseph Hobbs, who is also the father of the baby, was in the car at the time of the incident. He was also arrested for getting involved in the incident. Rent's young son and daughter, ages 9 and 3, also witnessed the incident.

The police department said the officer may not have known Rent was pregnant. Rent was taken to Roseland Hospital after a female officer noticed she was pregnant on the scene.

"You can't always tell if someone's pregnant," said Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy. "You want to use [a taser] where you're overcoming an assault or preventing escape — that's what it boils down to. That policy has been in effect for quite some time. Whether or not that policy has been adhered to is going to be examined separately from the investigation of the use of force."

According to a nursing supervisor, the baby was not harmed. Rent was treated and released.

Both Hobbs and Rent were charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest and simple assault. The pregnant woman was also cited for parking in a handicapped spot.

Rent was taken to UIC to get checked out because of pains she suffered Wednesday at her court appearance, and was released from the hospital later. Her family told the Tribune she has lost three babies in the past.

Her mother, sister, father-in-law and fiance were also at the hearing.

I have no problem with this. You don't want to be tased, do fuck around with cops. If you wanted to act like a badass and tear up a ticket, wait until you are out of sight of the cop.

And on the flip side of it, it doesn't make a fuck if she tore it up or not. The ticket was on her record and it was on her to deal with it.

So was she seated in the car the whole time? If she was wasn't out of the car, she might have looked like just another fat woman.

What did she do to get arrested in the first place? Tear up a ticket? Hard to resist an arrest that shouldn't happen in the first place.

Sure she was a bitch, but there's plenty of assholery to go around in this story.

She tore up the ticket, threw it at the officer and tried to take off, according to police.
That's more than just tearing up a ticket.

Ok, let's examine each part.

1. Tearing up ticket. - Who cares? He has her plate number.
2. Throwing paper at an officer. - Who cares? It's paper.
3. Tried to leave. - See number 1.

This could have been avoided. Just let the uppity bitch leave and slam her with a bunch more tickets for it. She learns her lesson without potentially zapping a little nigglet to death and costing the city millions in lawsuits.

I know you're against state-sponsored abortions and all but I like the odds here with a tasing. ;)

Don't be an asshole, you won't be on the wrong side. Handicap signs don't show pregnant women, do they? What's next, fat people parking there? Anyone siding with this piece of shit, is a piece of shit. Period

Eh, I never thought of it as liberal to want the government to stop using an electric shock device to control people. Put that bitch in a hammerlock and she'll sign the ticket, and no one ever died from a little twisted arm.

Tasers are dangerous and need to be thought of as a last resort, not the first thing to use when some sheboon gets lippy.

Now you're just being silly. Which has more potential to cause harm, a momentary application of electricity that every cop is subjected to during training, or getting into a physical altercation with a rowdy N?

You are assuming that her attempt to leave wasn't endangering someone.
She could have hit the cop or an innocent bystander trying to bail. Fuck this nig.
