The US gaming industry ended 2007 with record retail sales of nearly $18 billion. This week, though, the NPD Group provided a sobering reminder that market growth is not guaranteed.

Today, the industry-research firm released its US retail sales data for its January 2008 reporting period. While software sales for the month were up 11 percent to nearly $611 million for the month, hardware sales fell by a quarter to about $378 million. Combined with modestly declining accessory sales, the overall industry was down 6 percent for the month, posting $1.18 billion compared to January 2007's $1.25 billion take.

Despite that, the month contained indications that the industry actually grew. That's because NPD's January 2007 reporting period was actually five weeks long as opposed to this January's four-week span. NPD analyst Anita Frazier noted that the numbers are much rosier when that adjustment is taken into account.

"At the top-line, on an average sales per week basis, January 2007 was actually up nearly 18 percent as compared to last year," Frazier said. "And the big winner was console software which was up nearly 50 percent when compared on a level playing field to last year."

However, even on a week-by-week basis, hardware sales were still down 6 percent from last year. Frazier blamed that slide on price cuts made to the consoles, and speculated that hardware shortages in the wake of stellar December sales contributed to January's slide. That assertion was backed up a statement from Microsoft saying the Xbox 360 was suffering from temporary shortages.

Hardware sales weren't the only thing shrinking last month, and Nintendo's longtime lead on its competitors was similarly slimmed. The Wii once again took the system sales crown, but by a much narrower margin than in previous months--and with a new challenger nipping at its heels. In a month that saw significant advances for the PlayStation 3's chosen Blu-ray disc format, Sony's system ran nearly neck-and-neck with the Wii, selling 269,000 systems compared to the Nintendo console's 275,000. The third-place Nintendo DS racked up 251,000 system sales, while the PlayStation Portable and Xbox 360 brought up the rear, selling 230,000 units each.

THE NPD GROUP's JANUARY 2008 US GAME INDUSTRY SALES

Category / Total / Change
Video Games: $1.18 billion -6%
Video Games Hardware: $378 million -25%
Video Games Software: $550 million +11%
Video Game Accessories: $191 million -4%
Total Sales Per Week: $295 million +18%

Hardware Sales (in units sold)
Wii: 274,000
PlayStation 3: 269,000
Nintendo DS: 251,000
PlayStation Portable: 230,000
Xbox 360: 230,000

I've already seen the 360 fanbois saying that as well as "it's only because of the Blu-ray player"...the PS3 is no longer the cheapest player, that argument is moot.

As far as games, I LOL every time I see that.

I love how they try to talk shit about Blu-Ray like it's a bad thing. They forget the point that their video format has fucking died and one of the main reasons is because it wasn't included in their device.

Then they try to say that people don't buy game consoles for movies. Well, that was a major reason the PS2 sold as well.

Most people are just fucking retarded.

I saw this yesterday but I figured I'd wait for the poster who usually posts the NPD numbers every other month to do it.

I am pleased by this only because of the knuckleheads who trashtalked how the PS3 was going to fail at the rate it was going have taken a hit in their central argument.

If you're trending higher than the competition, you're no going to disappear.

Could someone explain the mindset of being a fanboy to me? As someone who owns all three consoles, I just don't get it. It's not like we get anything if one console beats another. Greater competition means nothing but cheaper prices and better games for us, the comsumer. Don't take this the wrong way. I'm not trying to flame, I was just curious.:action-sm

People do mostly buy the PS3 for the Blu-Ray player.

However, why not spend the money on it, considering that Blu-Ray player comes with a video game system tacked on to it?

I own all 3 too and there is no point. It comes from people just wanting to be right....they want to be able to say "See I told you ________ was better"...They get mad when people ask me out of the 3 which I would suggest and I say the one they don't have..Its pretty dumb to me..Each system has their strong point and weak points...

Actually, pretty much everyone is contributing this to lack of stock when it comes to the Wii and 360.

Because, you know, they actually sold them before Christmas.

Its kind of reminiscent to being an arrogant pats fan this year. So completely blind to any objective information about the competition. That or just wanting to be a part of something so bad. Like they were they guy that called it all along. That or they own stock in it. Its gotten to the point now, where rather than pro sony or pro microsoft, fanboys are more anti sony or anti microsoft(Same thing but different spin).

Its the same people who are the first to bash super smash bros, for being juvenile, even though fighting games have taken a dive as a genre, over the last 10 years or so. Just ignore all this fanboy nonsense at this point.

This generation of gaming has been the only true console war, there was some snes vs genesis shit, but everything that happens at the level of day to day operations, is blown ridiculously out of proportion like somehow "today's" news is going to swing the balance. I remember a couple years ago that shit about porn and choosing HD-DVD, and everyone was like, well thats it for BD. wow ps3 won 1 out of like the 14 months its been on the market. Every month, even every week, people post sales numbers to try and make it seem like they're on the right side. The arguments are always 360> ps3, then ps3+ps2> 360.

And yea, people are still buying ps3 because bd is emerging as the premier format, for now. In a year or two, playstations will still sell well, but more so for the reason of the games it has, just like the ps2 did. ps2 down the stretch didnt sell like 150 million cause it plays dvds

I like bringing it up just because of the bashing I took. When I said that the PS3 isn't failing and will rebound I got dogged out by the 360 and Wii fanboys. So this is just a pleasant bit of good news for me and bad news for them.

Hardware shortages for the Wii can be used as an excuse. But for the 360? You can find them with minimal effort. Maybe not in stock everywhere but they're in stock somewhere.

That argument might work for the Wii, but the 360 is widely available.::hammer:

It is good news indeed. I too have taken a beating from anti-PS3 hacks who are just itching to see Sony fail and their system rule the market. Then those same people (not necessarily here) would go into a "360 just died...what do I do?" thread stating they're on their fourth 360, but it's still got more games.

I'll say it again...I would much rather have 5 games I like and a system I can depend on rather than 15 games and a system that might die at any moment. Sony will get there in the games...and the fact that it is a great blu-ray player is just an added bonus. I don't know why fanbois have to harp about why people are buying the PS3 for the blu-ray. Who gives a shit...the bottom line is Sony is selling their product. At least we didn't have to buy a $160 box in order to play HD videos.

It's a more than a year later and threads like this still pop up. Bash, cuz I honestly do not care.

FYI Yes I have a Wii, 360 and plan on getting the PS3 later this summer.

Imagine that.

its strange. no one really acted like this when it was snes vs genesis, or ps2 vs xbox. people had their system of choice and defended it but it wasnt like this shit now. I blame message boards. people just want to argue.

I have to agree. the problems are message boards and people with opinions that they feel matter. they don't
