CORCORAN, Calif. -- California prison officials will free a quadriplegic rapist whose care costs the state $625,000 a year.

He applied last year to become the first inmate freed under a medical parole law that aims to reduce prison costs. Martinez was turned down as a public safety risk. An appeals court in San Diego rejected that decision last month and ordered his release.

He'll be the 48th inmate paroled under the program.

Martinez got 157 years-to-life in 1998 for a San Diego attack in which he rammed a woman's car, then kidnapped and repeatedly raped her.

He was paralyzed a decade ago when another inmate stabbed him in the neck.

That sounds good, until you realize he'll stop feeding off one public teat and get on another once he files for welfare and disability.

OTOH, he can't run away when the family comes for him.

I find it deplorable that they would just release a person who sexually violates people without use of their limbs.

I'm contacting my congressperson.

Would have saved a bunch of money if he had received the death penalty to begin with.

Well in any case the state is going to end up paying for his care... just coming out of a different coffer now.

Morons have decreed that no matter how depraved the crime, you can't kill someone unless they commit murder. The USSC has since ran with this.

He will end up in some government run hell hole of a nursing home. Or he will get his SSI benefit and medicare. He's everybody's problem now, not just California's.

I'm kind of naive (read: stupid) - can this piece of shit actually apply for AND get disability and welfare? I don't know why it surprises me that it's a possibility, or even a reality. The inmate that paralyzed him should be released instead and given a trophy.

He will surely be on some sort of registered offender list, which makes him easy to find. He can't get around too good, which makes him easy catch.
