and i'm pretty sure when i opened up my desktop i cried a bit because i think i bought the wrong cable and adapter. can i hook my laptop hard drive to my desktop?

Do you need it to be an internal drive, or is USB ok?

I bought a USB 2.0 external enclosure for notebook 2.5" hard drives for $10 off newegg.

i just want to pull the data off of it and then format. then just use it as a extra hard drive. usb is fine, what ever dosent brick my desktop. will xp mess up vista in any way?

Nope. It will just see it a d: or and e: drive. They both use the NTFS file system.
