Microsoft brings Outlook.com out of preview, begins shutting down Hotmail

By Brad Reed | BGR News – 2 hrs 36 mins ago

Microsoft Outlook
It seems there was a point to Microsoft’s (MSFT) anti-Gmail campaign after all: It’s meant to coincide with the launch of Outlook.com, the webmail alternative that Microsoft has been offering as a preview for the past several months. Microsoft on Tuesday announced that it was taking Outlook out of preview and was starting the process of transitioning its current Hotmail users over to the new system. Microsoft promises that Hotmail users will experience no disruptions in service and that “everything from their @hotmail.com email address, password, messages, folders, contacts, rules, vacation replies, etc. will stay the same, with no disruption in service.” The company also says that Outlook has garnered more than 60 million active users in the past six months, thus making it the “world’s fastest growing email service.”

Good luck, bro.

The whole 60 million users in six months is highly dubious.

I didn't even think you could get an @hotmail.com account anymore. Micro$oft seemed to move away from hotmail with their @live.com accounts. And now it looks like they're moving away from hotmail and live and pushing outlook.

Your county government uses an @hotmail.com email address?

That is what they send the fire, police, and EMS dispatch times report to the various departments from, that is correct, yes..
Wow... I guess if it's for internal use that's fine but it just seems a little unprofessional.

Hotmail is only for garbage mail. How can my gmail get over 100 spam messages per day and capture every single one of them in a spam folder yet hotmail never worked? All messages junk or otherwise ended up in the inbox. Microsoft just doesn't know what it wants. Hotmail, MSN, Live Mail, Outlook. Fucking pick one and make it work.

That's pretty much what I use hotmail for. Gmail for business, Yahoo for personal (just because I don't use it much and it's not worth changing).

I still have my original hotmail address. I remember a few years ago when they first rolled out LIVE domain and tried to get everyone migrate people from @hotmail to @live. They then went from bloated live crap to windows essentials bullshit. It just gets more bloated and useless each generation. I'm surprised that hotmail lasted this long.

They did the exact same thing when they tried to push everyone from @hotmail.com to @live.com

After a few months theygave up and brought hotmail back.

Same thing will happen with this.

Also,

I work in sales and I swear the only people that still use hotmail email addresses are black. All the white people have gmail accounts.

Poor of all colors still give yahoo emails too though.

Mine seems to be working the same. Except there's a "We will be upgrading soon. Click here to upgrade now." banner at the top.

I haven't checked my hotmail account in close to 2 years. I think I'll check it soon. I only used it to sign up to websites I never wanted email from.

Mine isn't from the mid-90s.. more like early 2000s. And for some reason, it's now my Windows 8 username and password. Which is annoying because the password is one auto-generated for me 10 years ago when I forgot my password, that I never bothered to change, and it's like 14 characters of letters and numbers long. Every time I log in I have to type this ridiculous password in.. I guess I could change it.. but I've had it so long... and it's impossible for anyone to figure out.. decisions, decisions..

I still use the hotmail account because it's associated with IE messenger, Xbox Live and now my windows 8 login, but gmail has been my main email account since they first rolled it out.
