Iranian Defence Ministe says Moscow to deliver Russian S-300 missile defence system to Tehran.

TEHRAN - Russia is to deliver to Iran a S-300 air missile defence system, Iranian Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said on Wednesday, according to state radio.

"The S-300 system will be delivered to Iran within the framework of a contract agreed in the past," he was quoted as saying, without giving the date of the contract.

"The timing of the delivery will be announced at a later date," he added.

Earlier this year Moscow delivered to Tehran TOR-M1 air defence missile systems estimated to be worth 700 million dollars. However Iranian state media said the S-300 is an even more sophisticated system.

Syria had those too. Remember what happened a few months ago when the Israelis wanted to hit some suspected nuclear sites in Syria? Sites went boom Israeli jets got home safely. Go ahead Iran. Stock up on that useless Russian hardware.

The S-300 isn't useless.

The US has actually bought a S-300 system for evaluation and to help upgrade Patriots with superior technology that was taken upon evaluation of S-300.

The S-300V (current Russian model) is actually more capable than the MIM-104 Patriot Model (current US model) in terms of longevity, capabilility, and functionality.

My bad. It seems the Syrians were using a different Russian system also billed as state of the art. Can't wait to see what stealthy aircraft will do to them though.

A Kuwaiti newspaper wrote that “Russian experts are studying why the two state-of-the art Russian-built radar systems in Syria did not detect the Israeli jets entering Syrian territory. Iran reportedly has asked the same question, since it is buying the same systems and might have paid for the Syrian acquisitions.”

The system in question is thought to be the new Tor-M1 launchers which carries eight missiles as well as two of the Pachora-2A system. Iran bought 29 of the Tor launchers from Russia for $750 million to guard its nuclear sites, and they were delivered in Jan., according to Agency France-Press and ITAR-TASS. Syrian press reports they were tested in February. They also are expected to form a formidable system when used with the longer-range S-300/SA-10 which Iran has been trying to buy from Russia. Syria has operated SA-6s for years and more recently has been negotiating with Russians for the Tor-M1. What systems were actually guarding the Syrian site are not known.

One thing to consider is that Russia may not be selling the top-of-the-line hardware that they keep for themselves.
During the Cold War, the weapons they sold was the pure vanilla stuff while they kept the fully loaded versions for themselves. They may still have some of the old paranoia they used to have and think there may be a day when they may have to face the hardware they sold.
Just ask Libya and Iraq about that.

Besides we do have these options that make it alot harder for them

And if all else fails....

Wild Weasels!
