I thought the discussion on the listening thread was interesting, between the trolling and the themes it hit, so let's see if we can get the discussion going in a "clean" thread, without all the "how do you do X in Video Game Y?", "Opie sucks", and all the rest of the side conversations.

From the bit that I've seen, the coach was out of control. What, precisely, is the point of throwing a basketball at one of your guys (at his head, his crotch, his chest, I don't give a fuck where) when he's looking the other way on an inbounds play? As in, he's looking at his teammate with the ball? I'm pretty sure that in basketball, only one ball is allowed on the court at one time, so you shouldn't be looking for a pass from anyone other than the inbounding player.

I've been around coaches and teachers that have lost their cool. Shit, I've been the reason many of them have lost their cool. And I get that the footage in question was culled from hundreds of hours of footage and probably represents the worst of what this guy has done. That's kind of enough.

It's like the hazing shit. Getting shit on because you're a rookie? No biggie. It's life. Getting the shit beaten out of you or getting ass r@ped by your "friends" because you're a rookie? That's fucking retarded.

The shit this coach pulled doesn't toughen guys up. It doesn't teach them to be better players. It was about the coach, not about the players. It was about him, him, him, him. At best, that's the sign of a shitty coach.

Like I said this morning, the guy was on pretty thin ice already (disciplinary actions, poor team performance, etc) so this was just the last straw. RU was looking for a way to fire him with reason and this was it. Ive played organized sports and have had some tough coaches but none to the extent that this guy went to. A coach is supposed to inspire a player to do better, not humiliate a kid that is fucking up drills.

All the bullshit "You dont know what practice is like" nonsense from this morning just isnt true. The guy was and is a prick and the team/university will be better off without him.

He deserved being fired for being a piss-poor coach and throwing the basketballs at players more than what he said.

As I said in the LT, I really don't have a problem with that kind of abuse if it yielded results... But it didn't. He was doing it to be a dick. Bobby Knight was probably worse, but he has 3 national championships under his belt. This guy seemed to relish abusing his players and got nothing out of it.

It was clear that the school didn't want this as it had already suspended him. He was given the notice to stop his behavior and right the ship at Rutgers and he did neither.

Even if he wasn't suspended and warned for his language and physical conduct, look at the guy's record.

First Year:
15-17
Next Year
14-18

So not only did his actions not help the team win, the took a 1 win step backwards this season.

5-13 and 6-12 in conference aren't really lighting it up either, wouldn't you say?

Three year's prior the last coach was fired for going 15-17.

Plus, once those videos got out what were they supposed to do? It isn't just coaching. College sports are recruitment, too. Who do you think wants to
play for the team that has a nationally infamous prick as the coach and goes 6-12 in conference. And is located in Newark and Camden, New Jersey. What's that?
Fuckin' nobody? Exactly.

Edit: People are bringing up Bob Knight. Look at his tournament success with all the Sweet Sixteens, Elite Eights and Final Fours and 3 National Championships, one of which was a perfect season.
Look at the regular season records. He had one losing season in about 40 years.
Was a Bob Knight a cunt? Yeah. Could he at least recruit well and field competent teams? Yep.

Dont you mean they did want him to be fired? You contradict yourself there.

The basketball team lives and plays in the New Brunswick area campuses. Same goes for all the other sports. All of the Rutgers campuses have little affiliation with eachother and Newark and Camden most of all. The only time I had any interactions with those campuses is when I had to get a book transferred up to the library on my campus.

I don't accept the argument that it was done this way in the past or whatever. That doesn't make it the right way to go about it. And I've had gym teachers and commanding officers who never touched me or called me any names but were notoriously menacing hard asses nonetheless. And once again it goes back to this fucking college bastion horseshit. What, not one person in the entire faculty ever went to him and say "hey, about about you knock it the fuck off with that shit?" I think in a world where people had less of an image of college sports as the place where rules and laws go to die then maybe stuff like this would have caused less of an outrage, although I doubt it because of the physicality involved.

What percentage of coaches out there pull similar shit? Pretty much every single defensive line coach is worse than this guy.

This guy has nothing on Nick Saban when he's pissed off. He's thrown players back off the sideline and called them worst things DURING games, with cameras on him. But, he gets results and knows his shit, so no one says anything.

I didn't contradict myself. I was just unclear. I meant, it was clear that the school didn't want THIS, the videos of him pushing people and calling them queers and cunts and throwing basketballs at them.
If this got out to the public, he was DONE. And he was.

I've seen Marine Corps DIs that didn't put half that enthusiasm into training people to be warriors and killers.

Seriously, mister basketball game coach... simmer your stupid ass down already.

Rutgers is in New Brunswick which is where all the athletic programs are. They have a satellite campus located in Camden on the waterfront but its only offers classes for a small handful of majors (law and some science majors). It's a very small campus of about a half dozen buildings.

You forgot Newark. Newark has their own division 3 sports teams BTW.
Just a little picture of bygone years to throw in there:

Most of the coaches have a little bump in their salary from using a company's product..This guy was a tool bag and deserved to be fired. From what I have heard from people that I am friends with that still work there...he was a total and complete tool bag off the court too.

That i did forget newark. As far as I know Camden has a intermural soccer league. I do not know of any ncaa programs there. I only know one person who ever went there and she was a very butch dyke
