Gunman Opens Fire On City Council Meeting

KIRKWOOD, Missouri (AP) - Six people are dead after a gunman opened fire on a city council meeting in Kirkwood.
Witnesses say the gunman ran into the Kirkwood city council meeting soon after it started. A reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was at the meeting, and says the man yelled, "All we want is justice." The man then began to shoot, hitting the town's mayor and several other city officials.
Among the six dead, police in Kirkwood say, are the shooter and two officers. At least 30 people were in the council chambers at the time.
Stay tuned to KOMU and KOMU.com for more details as they come in.

Was just reading about it on another site.

That's fucked up. Apparently the guy had been removed from previous council meeting for being 'unruly' and such.

Well he said his life was being ruined by those fucks in the city council and issued him over 150 tickets.

If they were harassing him with tickets and racking up thousands in fines then I can't really blame the guy for doing what he did.

Those city council motherfuckers are annoying and they are crooks.

I won't label him a lunatic. He sounds like a man who was tired of being pushed around by "officials."

The mayor in the city that I used to live in was a crooked motherfucker. He's still there but he's leaving after this term.

They "mismanaged" things like the water treatment plant that ended up going 30 million dollars over budget.

And now they are working on building new sidewalks and flowerbeds in the city square, that's about a 45yard by 45yard square, that are costing the city $1,000,000. I don't ever remember flowerbeds costing that much to make. Someone got a no-bid contract that's friends of the mayor.

Now the city is overbudget and businesses are leaving the area because the taxes are too high and they offer no incentives to small business. But it's not the government officials that have to pay for that. Their salaries are guaranteed, but those cops are going to be laid off pretty soon along with the firefighters.

I'll label him a douche.

Here's the deal...

Ol' "Cookie" WAS a douche.

He ran a demolition company... he didn't have a permit for the business because he refused to apply for one, and pay for one... because he was a douche.

He illegally parked his heavy equipment... dump truck, bulldozers, etc... in the yard of his residential home and on public streets... because he was a douche.

He illegally ran his unlicensed demolition business out of an illegal structure which he built without a permit in his backyard in a residentially zoned neighborhood... because he was a douche.

He frequently showed up to to city council meetings making threats, and ranting and raving about the fines and tickets he was given for his many acts of douchery... because he was a douche.

He would show up at the council and "play the race card"... referring to the council as, "the plantation", and the fines they had levied against him, "slave tax"... because he was a douche.

Go ahead... assume that this dumb, angry, murderous savage who refused to play by the rules of a civilized society was just a poor "little guy" being harassed and persecuted by a crooked system, maaaaaan!, but if he lived next door to you, I guarantee you wouldn't be referring to him as "Cookie", you'd be labeling him "a douche"... same as me.

I have to laugh at this, because the irony of your statement is if we DON'T 'play by the rules of civilized society', men wearing pieces of metal on their chests can shoot us down like dogs and be called heroes. I'm not saying what this guy did was morally justified or right or anything-- murder is wrong no matter what the reason. But don't sanctify a bunch of assholes wearing the same color clothing and claim the moral high ground when they kill someone for disobeying 'the rules'.

Huh? :icon_eek:

Dude... what are you on about? Men wearing metal on their chests? They slapped a few fines on "Cookie"... some tickets... in the mail... envelopes containing sheets of paper. How the fuck is that like shooting anybody down like a dog?

Moral high ground? Same color clothing?

Whaa?

Dude... they slapped some tickets on a dipshit who was running an unlicensed demolition company out of his back yard. Why you gotta go and get all Orwellian with it?

Hey, I'm not saying that the guy did the right thing. I'm just saying it's understandable how you can be pushed to do something stupid.

So the guy "illegally" parked work vehicles on his private property at his home?

He had an "illegal" shop built in his backyard that the city wouldn't grant a permit for?

What's illegal? Them saying where he can or can't park vehicles or put up a shop that doesn't follow some sort of building code?

To determine whether or not he was a douche we need to know how much money he was making every year and how much "commercial" property costs in his area. The city "officials" may have priced land out of reach of many people with their stupid fucking taxes.

Corrupt city officials removed his ability to provide for his family.

What he did was wrong, but to call the city council innocent is fucking naive.

How is that so hard to understand?

Some square badge code enforcement douche for that li'l city went a wee bit overboard with those tickets. I'm sure the shitty council also had their hands out to make the "problem" go away.

How is thinking you should get a permit to run a demo company naive? He wasn't running a lemonade stand. If Cookie had fucked up a demo job and people were killed would you still be defending him or would you blame the city council for not enforcing basic business rules.

Maybe the city council was being a bunch of assholes but it had to start somewhere. With Cookie.

How do you all of a sudden know every piece of information about the dude? Are you making assumptions based on context or do you actually know more about his story than we do?

Then, why didn't he have the permits? I mean, I know if I want to build a little shed in my back yard I don't feel I should have to spend hundreds of dollars to buy a permit to get it done. It's my property, I should be able to build on it. Like the Super Bowl story, what if the City Council had just cock blocked his permits because of personal reasons...

I guess my point is don't ignore what Sam_Adams and I are saying as crazy without giving us your reasons for knowing what we don't about the story.

The Webster-Kirkwood Times published an extensive story on Thornton and his one-man crusade against city hall in August 2003. He often referred to city officials as "jackasses" at public meetings, and refers to Kirkwood as "the plantation." He has referred to the thousands of dollars in fines assessed against him by the courts as a "slave tax."

Thornton, raised in Meacham Park, was once very much involved in community service, having served on seven area boards, several of those related to youth activities.

Please...

the guy was a fucking problem. This isn't a case of a guy who put up a tool shed in his backyard. He was running a frigging construction and demolition company out of a residential neighborhood. He'd been pulling his stupid shit for ten years! You know damn well that if this guy lived next door to you, you would have been the first one to be screaming at the city officials, demanding that they throw the book at him.

All of the "problem's" in this jackasses life were self-inflicted. If he had just played by the rules... like every other contractor somehow manages to do, then he would have lived a nice, happy life, and the six people he murdered would be enjoying dinner at home with their families right now instead of lying on a cold slab down at the morgue.

Fuck Cookie.

Thornton would routinely bring signs to the meetings. One showed three monkeys and read “hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.” Thornton said the monkeys represented Mayor Mike Swoboda, Public Works Director Kenneth Yost and City Attorney John Hessell. At other times, Thornton called city officials “jackasses” and bray like a donkey. The mayor eventually ordered Thornton to leave the podium and called the police. When the police came to the podium, Thornton sat on the floor and refused to leave. He was arrested and later convicted of disorderly conduct. He appealed his conviction to a state appeals court.

Between March 1996 and April 2005, Thornton had been charged with 114 violations of the city’s ordinances. He pleaded guilty and was convicted of most of them, according to court records. The charges against Thornton stemmed mostly from his unlawful operation of a construction business in the city. But he also had been convicted of assault and battery against Ken Yost, the city’s public works director.

Despite the citations, Thornton returned to the property to continue working and was arrested for working without an approved site plan. He was found guilty of 34 of the 38 counts and fined. The 2005 appeals court ruling indicated that Yost cited Thornton in May 2001 for numerous violations relating to building codes and allowing unlawful conditions and activities to exist on a property at 299 McCullough Avenue where he was performing some construction and plumbing work.

In May 2002, Thornton sued the city for malicious prosecution and sought more than $12 million dollars. But the court rejected that suit. Thornton represented himself in most of his cases but he had hired an attorney, Irwin Roitman, to represent him at one point. But Roitman withdrew in December 2003 after Thornton filed court documents without his knowledge or approval, according to court records.

The weekly Webster-Kirkwood Times quoted Swoboda as saying in June 2006 that Thornton’s contentious remarks over the years created “one of the most embarrassing situations that I have experienced in my many years of public service.”
Thornton regularly parked his trucks and work-related equipment on various lots, for days and often for weeks at a time. He was cited for those violations, as he was for regularly violating building codes, and for performing work without permits. Thornton had his own construction and demolition company. In 2003, Kirkwood City Attorney John Hessel said Thornton had collected the largest number of fines he had ever witnessed since representing cities beginning in 1977. Thornton, a 1974 graduate of Kirkwood High School, attempted to sue the city in 2003 for "malicious prosecution" in an incident in which he was cited for grading without a permit.

Corrupt city officials removed his ability to provide for his family.

Well, if you need a permit to do the type of work he was doing, and you refuse to apply and pay for said permits and/or licensing. You will have to answer for your actions.

The only one removing his ability to provide for his family is Cookie. Because he didn't want to do what was required of a person looking to work in that field. Oh, and because he got himself killed too. He's not providing for shit anymore.

There is nobody to blame for this BUT himself. If he did what every other legally operating business in the US did, which is to apply for applicable licenses and permits to operate, he wouldn't have been fined over and over again.

Actually now that I think about it. I've always wanted to become a doctor. Think I'll open my practice Monday. License schmicense.
