In the book "A Deepness in the Sky" by Vernor Vinge, humans find a planet with intelligent spider-like creatures at a mid-20th century technology level. They don't progress very quickly because they have to hibernate underground for years at a time. The planet goes through extended cycles of extreme cold (I can't remember if it rotates away from the sun or gets eclipsed by another celestial body). In any case, it gets so cold that the atmosphere freezes and falls like snow on the ground.

I love seeing when speculative things from sci-fi pop up in the real world. It just gives them an added measure of validity. Like this could actually happen.
