So with a bunch of trailers coming out over the past few days, it got me thinking- which will be the big summer movie for 2013? Not which one you're most looking forward too, but which would make the most money.

May:
Iron Man 3 - May 3
The Great Gatsby- May 10
Star Trek Into Darkness (a terrible title I think)- May 17
Epic (animated)- May 24
Fast and Furious 6- May 24
The Hangover Part III- May 24

June
After Earth (Shylaman/Smiths on desolate Earth)- June 7
Man of Steel- June 14
Monsters University- June 21
World War Z- June 21
Kick-Ass 2- June 28
White House Down (the first of two kidnapped President movies, this one starring Channing Tatum, Jaime Foxx, and Maggie Gyllenhaal)- June 28

July
Despicable Me 2- July 3
Lone Ranger- July 3 (I didn't realize that DM2 is coming out the same day)
Grown Ups 2- July 12
Pacific Rim- July 12
RIPD (Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges are recently slain cops fighting the undead)- July 19
The Wolverine- July 26
The Smurfs 2- July 31

And I am only including major possible box office busters on the list, not smaller movies like Now You See Me about magician bank robbers starring Social Network, Alfred Pennyworth, Lucius Fox, and Bruce Banner III. (Which I kind of want to see)

As for which of these movies I think will be the King of Summer- this might be a controversial choice, but right now I'm going with Man of Steel even if sequels generally do better box office than non-sequels. Even with fandango86 preparing to see Lone Ranger at least 8 times.

Top 5 (in no particular order):
Man of Steel
Star Trek Into Darkness
Iron Man 3
Lone Ranger
The Hangover Part III

I like your list, except I'd knock out Hangover in place of Despicable Me 2, and I think Man of Steel is gonna tank. That's not an indication of if it will be good or not, that of course remains to be seen, but I think it's just not gonna call to anyone except people who are ultimately going to write disappointing things about it.

You hate 2/5 of my list. That means I get a 60 at best.

Though I do think choosing Man of Steel as #1 is stupid because of the sequel rule. Then I guess it would be between Iron Man III and Star Trek II but I can't see either of them being the biggest movie of the summer.

EDIT: The reason I choose Hangover III is that as bad as the second one was, a) I think people like the franchise and b) I think people want a bawdy comedy and the only other one I saw one starring Will Ferrell/Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn called The Internship.

I also don't know about audiences flocking to Pacific Rim, even if it does have both Jax and Clay from Sons of Anarchy in it. But that might be a sleeper hit. Is it supposed to be PG-13 or R? I assume PG-13.

I'm trying to be a kinder, gentler crip and not just insult the shit out of you for picking a movie I don't agree with.

Since you're in many ways our resident movie guy, what about a list of the smaller movies for some predictions on which unknown movies are going to hit huge, like the first Hangover did, or Big Fat Greek Wedding did, for example.

Iron Man 3 is a virtual lock for $400 million. I'd love to see Man of Steel challenge that number, and think that it will. Those will be the top 2 by a wide margin. Skyfall's surprising( to everyone but me) success does open the door for Star Trek to possibly get to $300. The remaining two spots will be Monsters U and Hangover 3

Out of the rest, only Despicable Me 2 is a threat to crack $200.

Just checked. Star Trek did $257,730,019.

I think Into Dark that is Scary Dark will do better, but not top 400K.

Not sure if IM3 will either, especially after 2 was such a suck fest. IM2 was 312,433,331 and IM 1 did
318,412,101.

Needs a huge bounce from Avengers to crack 400k and I think too much time may have lapsed.

Iron Man 3 should be the top movie of the summer. If not ever. Okay maybe not ever. But I still think it wins the Summer.

I agree with Liddy's top 5, except for Hangover 3. It might be one of the biggest R rated movies of all time, but that still won't be top 5 of all money makers next summer.

Yeah I can see that. Especially after just watching the new trailer for the Man of Steel.

A year? A year is no time in movie world. It was three years between Batman Begins and Dark Knight. I can't see Iron Man III breaking $400 million, but that depends on if it has something to draw people in again and again. But yeah, Iron Man III probably would be #1 unless one of those other movies really surprises everyone.

Iron Man 3 should be the top movie of the summer. If not ever. Okay maybe not ever. But I still think it wins the Summer.

Hangover Part I was #6 of 2009 with $277 million and beaten by Avatar, Transformers, Harry Potter and the Half Blood, Twilight Saga New Moon, and Up (with two of those coming out in the fall/winter. It also beat Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes)

Hangover Part II was #4 of 2011 with $254 and beaten by Twilight Breaking Dawn #1, Transformers 3, and Harry Potter Deathly Hallows #2.

Ted ($218) was #8 this year being beaten by Avengers, Dark Knight, Hunger Games (which surprisingly broke $400 million and the sequel might very well end up being 2013's highest grossing film), Twilight BD2, Skyfall, Spiderman, and Brave- which also makes it #5 for summer 2012.

I don't know how well people liked Hangover Part II, I personally didn't, but I don't doubt its potential viability.

However, I didn't take into account Monsters U. or Despicable Me 2 because animated films do tend to do quite well.

Grown Ups II is my dark horse. That movie did retarded business. It did 271 million in Amurrrika in 2010. I think it is a total threat for 300 million.

Normally I'd agree with you but it will be stymied by Hangover 3 and Adam Sandler is in a major box office rut, as is Kevin James.

After doing some research, here's my predictions:

Iron Man 3 - $430
Man of Steel - $360
Monsters U - $340
Star Trek -$310
Despicable Me 2 - $275
Hangover 3 - $220
Fast 6 - $190
Grown Ups 2 - $185
Wolverine - $170
Smurfs 2- $140
Lone Ranger - $125

I may amend this as it gets closer and we see if there's any buzz on Epic, Pacific Rim, After Earth, World War Z, and White House Down. All of those have $100 million dollar potential. I may also drop expectations on the Lone Ranger if Depp's performance stirs up any controversy, which I sincerely believe is possible.

I can buy that but I still feel like Grown Ups 2 cracks 200 million.

None o the films you mentioned are 200 million caliber apart from After Earth, just cuz Will Smith and M. Nigtht and World War Z with the zombie thing that is petering out but still exists.

Really doesn't bode well for your Lone Ranger prediction.

Still, I'm not sure - Godzilla meets Transformers meets Real Steel? I also hate movies like this where all the action takes place at night or in the rain. I'd put it's box office potential in the $80 to $150 range.

There's almost 2 weeks between Lone Ranger and Pacific Rim. I stand by my opening week prediction.

I was wondering if the JJ Abrams/Star Wars news will give Star Trek a bump to put it above Iron Man 3 in box office receipts. Probably not, but I'm just putting it out there. I also just realized we haven't gotten anything like a trailer from The Hangover 3 yet.
