Probably. You'd be amazed at all the electricians who don't realize the importance of proper grounding.
A house's electrical system has an inductive capacitance. When it gets hit by lightning that surge wants to trickle out to somewhere but the lack of strong grounding causes that surge to bleed across more objects and do more damage.
