Here're 2 of the better known ones ....

The "Ouya"

nVidia's "Shield"

Once these are successful, and they probably will be, you can expect an onrush of cheaply made -- yet surprisngly capable -- $99 gaming consoles available anywhere from street vendors to your local "Ted's 99¢ Emporium".

Couple this with the next-gen of consoles just around the proverbial corner -- and substantive "Half-Life 3" news --
I'd say we're in for a very interesting year of gaming!

What say you?

Oh, yes -- fuck Danny Ross.

The Ouya is actually very real and not the proverbial vaporware I thought it to be. I'm looking forward to seeing what is going to happen.

Pretty cool. It should definitely be interesting to see what's going to happen.

Oh, and that's one beastly lookin woman at Ouya.

Okay, looking at Nvidia's Shield is something I have envisioned for a long time. How come no one has developed a controller with a smartphone mounting bracket that would allow you to play games or has it been done already?

That's not the same "hacker" you are thinking of.

The hacker they refer to are the guys that take something and modify it to do what they want.
http://makezine.com/ has tons of examples of the hardware hacks they are speaking of.

True, she should have said "modders" in the context instead of "hackers". Other than that, making a console way open source just sort of scares me.

No.

They are commonly referred to as hardware hackers. That's what they are.

Sorry a word scares you so much.

Open source is actually safer in many ways because any vulnerabilities can be fixed much quicker.

I never heard the term. Ive only heard of them as modders.

And scared might be a bit much. Leery is more like it. I had an identity theft scare last year to the tune of a $10k tax issue so I guess since then Im a bit more careful with my personal info.

Open source doesn't mean the same is no encryption. Firefox, for example, is open source as well.

This thread is missing something...
Oh ....?

Like what?

I think we're having a pleasant & thoughtful discourse about an industry that coninues to
outpace in revenue year after year all other media -- books/music/TV [ad buys]/movies -- combined.

Have you voted in the poll?

It's only good for another 6 days, you know.
