I was hoping to start this with the release of the official depth charts, but we don't look to be getting those until later this week. With that, I give you the official thread for Penn State Nittany Lions football for 2011;

Its a TOUGH schedule this year, especially those last three games. Play this year is almost certain to come down to the offensive line. With Bolden and McGloin coming off a tough 2010 they are going to need some running help from Silas Redd. If the OLine can make holes for Redd and keep defenses honest we could be looking at a good season. If not, another season of 7-5 or 6-6 could follow.

On an up note, and after last years class we are currently sitting on the number 10 recruiting class in the nation, with many 4 and 5 star recruits looking at us.

Looks like at least for ISU Bolden and McINT will be splitting reps. I hope to God that Bolden beats out McPick. Also of note; the fullbacks and our Right Guards will be splitting reps as well. I think the situation for the fullbacks will play out like that all season; as for the Right Guard situation looks like even after three years, Troutman STILL hasn't been able to cement his position there.

12 Stephon Morris (5-8, 184, Jr/Jr)
15 Alex Kenney (6-0, 195, So/Fr

Not too much surprising here really. I'd expect to see a lot of rotation on the line and linebacking corps. I'm most disappointed that Astorino is still starting at safety. Aside from being overly aggressive several times last year, I think Willis proved that he is a better choice when he was playing in place of Sukay.

They will get their asses handed to them by Bama.
Maybe we should get JoePa to call Alabama and ask them to postpone the series because Penn State isn't as good as Alabama right now....like Alabama did.

I'll be following along with all the Penn State goodness (and badness) with you this year, Hoffman. No need to abandon this thread and go to the SEC circle jerk thread.

There's a good number of Penn State fans here. Also, here's the official video to kick off the year;

I like the official video. Penn State really is the best place to play. You may not compete for a National Championship every year but you won't have to worry about the NCAA slapping sanctions on your program either like you do at the schools that do compete for the National Championship every year. There's nothing like a game at Beaver Stadium with 100+ fans.

It worries me a bit starting a guy who at one point quit on his team rather than compete for his job.

Is there any chance Penn State will go with the triple option and just skip having a QB throw this year?

I honestly feel like Penn State has a chance to be 2nd in the B1G this year, under Wisconsin. And as a fairweather Michigan fan, I really hope they beat Nebraska and Ohio State.

Nice win today to start off the season. I didn't get to watch any of it but it seems as if Redd had a good day.

Saw the game. Here is my opinion:

1. Redd is the real deal. I think we are looking at 1300 yards, 12+ TDs from him. I think the whole running game will be very solid this year.
2. The back 7 of our defense is going to be very good and I think the front four (led by Still) is going to improve greatly as the season progresses.
3. Joe needs to forgive our Kicker Fera for his booze love and get him back on the field because the kid who replaced him in thsi game was awful. He will definately cost us a game or two with his shitty kicking.
4. The line has to get their asses in gear with pass protection...both Bolden and McGloin were pressured way too much for my liking from a D1AA team.

This leads us to the QBs...neither looked like world beaters. Bolden actually should have had better stats but there were 1-2 TD passes he would have had had Brown/Moye not dropped easy passes. The offense did seem to spark better under McGloin but he should have thrown a pick 6 had the defnder not dropped an easy INT. Therein lies the problem with McGloin...his ego writes checks his arm cannot cash adn it costs us big time. I wish Bolden would take the reigns once and for all but I am not sure the kid has the mental makeup. I have heard from some that Joe really wanted to go vanilla this game as to not give anything away for next week but who knows.

I went to PSU in 1993-1998 and this year has undoubtedly the toughest schedule Penn State has had since I went there. We could be a much better team than last year and still struggle for 8-9 wins. We have 4 games where we will be underdogs (Alabama, Ohio State, Nebraska, and Wisc) and 3 others were I think will be tough regardless (Iowa, Ill and NW)...not to be a homer but if we win the Big 10 with one loss, fuck BBoise State or an undefeated ACC team...we deserve a pot in the BCS Championship.

Going to Philly for the temple game and out to PSU for Nebraska...can't wait!

Sadly I didn't get to watch the game, but I was VERY excited to hear just how good a game Redd had. If he can run this well against the better teams the pressure will be taken off the QB's hopefully. I knew seeing this kid last year he was going to be the real deal. To think he has three years left at Penn State makes me giddy. He can EASILY break Roysters all time rushing mark if he keeps going.

Ugh.

Regarding the actual game:

1. The defense played pretty well considering the offense turned the ball over 3x and had some 3 and outs.

2. If I never see Devon Smith on the field again it will be too soon. He has been playing for 3 years now and all I hear is how blazing fast he is. However just because you can run fast on a track does not mean you are football fast and he is not. He is a runt who never makes anyone miss and gets knocked down by a stiff breeze. I do not recall one single play he has made in the past 3 years no matter how much they try to showcase him. His fumble today was the last straw with me.

3. While I am Pro-Bolden, I cannot fault McGloin entirely for his bad game. I can fault the PSU coaching staff ENTIRELY for thinking it was a good idea to shuttle QBs in against the best defense in the country. You can get away with that against Indiana State or Eastern Michigan but a Top2 team in the nation????I read enough comments to know I was not alone thinking Paterno should have stayed with Bolden after his hot start instead of only 2 series to get McGloin in. He killed the momentum Bolden (or even maybe McGloin) might have been able to sustain by drilling into these kids psyche's that they could be pulled after any bad play. I will be thoroughly disgusted if they are still doing this roulette come next week. For a coach who ahs been around the game for 60 years, how does he not know a QB needs to get repetitions and a rhythm going to gain success? Every analysis I have read about this game says the same thing: "How the heck can Pterno continue to not name a true starter and say they are still evaluating after winter/spring ball, training camp and 2 games????No QB has ever been successful as a pinch hitter. McGloin reinforced today why he did not get a D1 offer...does well against crap defenses but when faced with elite teams, he cannot hang. Start Bolden and give him a long leash so he does not have to look over his shoulder after every INT.

4. 6 TO in 2 games against Alabama. The apologists will say "if we only did not turn the ball over" like it was luck while the realist say "Elite teams make inferior teams make mistakes." There was 4 straight passes in the 3rd that all could have/should have been INTs for Bama.

This game just illustrated the difference between an elite program and good program. While I think our defense can hang with just about anyone, our offense has the fluidity and innovation of a Long Island High School team. I turned on the SC-GA game and their offensive personnel just looked so smooth and crisp...everything we do on offense seems to be a struggle to pull off successfully. Wobbly thrown passes behind or over the head of the WR, balls that are juggled on the occasion when they actually are caught, bad routes. Silas Redd looks like he will be good, but there is not a single Blue Chipper on offense to be seen at QB, WR, OL...

Our Head Coach up in the booth did not help matters...especially since we had to call 3 friggin timeouts in the 1st quarter alone because of late communication. I hope whenever the time comes for Joe to finally step away, we retain the defensive coaches and completelly gut the offensive coaches. Galen Hall, Jay Paterno and Richie Anderson need to go and get some coaches in there with accountability. How many times is our offense going to go into the toilet against good defenses before changes are made? Sadly, none until Joe finally realizes to step down.

Typical Penn State v. big name team. Conservative, predictable game calling. Sad thing is, this isn't changing anytime soon. Anyways, my thoughts.

1. QB Situation: enough of the swap. Stick with Bolden, he is the future of the team, not McGloin. I fail to see why Joe has assistants when he continually refuses to listen to them and gives his pet project players playing time when they do not deserve it. McGloin has no arm...NO arm. Sure, Bolden made some mistakes, and threw and INT. Big deal. He's NINETEEN years old for gods sake and a true sophomore playing in his seventh or so game. Do you think Joe that maybe, just MAYBE if you had played him more last year he'd be further along at making his reads? I don't blame Rob for blowing all three timeouts on the first drive, I blame Joe and the coaching situation he has set up. I don't want to see both QB's playing against Temple next week, unless McGloins reps are coming in mop up duty. He simply doesn't deserve to be out there.

2. O-Line: They look much better now than they did last year. Sure, they're a little rough but they have time to put it together for the Big Ten. I am pleasantly holding out hope that they will continue to gel and improve as the year progresses. Now, that still doesn't take away that we do horribly at developing our o-line talent. Sadly, like many of our other woes that won't be fixed anytime soon either.

3. D: Played a good game. I think they were just gassed at the end of the game, and certainly didn't get any help from the offense yesterday. Richardson certainly did not run wild on us like he did last year, they did very well containing him. I was bothered that against a green QB we did not blitz at all; but again, another JoePa thing. Bend, don't break. Sorry Joe, it doesn't work anymore. You have the personnel to do it, you need to blitz these young quarterbacks and get them off their game. But no, we'll do the same thing against OSU this year and allow a true freshman to stand there in the pocket and make throws all day long.

4. Joe: I'm sorry Joe, but its time for you to go. Curley and SPanier need to grow a set and tell you its over. No new contract, you are embarrassing the program at this point. The best recruits don't want to play for you, and you don't have the same motivation you did back in your heyday. Its time to move on, bring in Urban Meyer or Dan Mullen next year before a coach comes in and DOESN'T have the talent pool to be successful.

1. Every fan and analysist of the team is saying the same exact thing. If Joe says he is playing both AGAIN this weekend, I am going to throw my computer against the wall.
2. Another fossil just collecting a paycheck is fucking Rich ANderson the OLine coach. Our OLine has been shit for the better part of a decade and this guy still holds a job. There is no reason based on our geogrpahy and style of play that we cannot get big 320lb OLinemen every year. But again it is a Joe thing where he thinks 300+lb OLinemen are not athletic. An issue when your HC used to recruit linemen who were 230lbs in the 1960s.
3. D played OK. Did not get a sack or one turnover after Alabama had 7 or so against Kent State. That is unbelievable.
4. We will see how the finish up but the natives are getting restless with the mediocrity of the program under his watch the last 10 years.
