How does iTunes calculate popularity? I figured Opie & Anthony's podcast would do well, but this doesn't seem right for a placeholder that hasn't even really been promoted that much:

EDIT: iTunes displays the Top Episodes and Top Podcasts based on a combination of recent subscriptions, downloads, and customer reviews.

It's the recent subscriptions doing it. It'll take a few weeks to see where they settle in.

On the podcast app itself, they're in 4th place behind Maron, Carolla, and some show I've never heard of, but just ahead of Joe Rogan and Ricky Gervais.

Sam mentioned yesterday that the list shows new subscribers added. It will cycle itself in time

I think Rogan or Jay Mohrs explained how the iTunes ranking system worked once. It's very screwy and open to manipulation.

It was Jay Mohr who explained it. Something about each episode going and subscribing to it even if you're already subscribed to their podcast already. Supposedly that adds an entire new subscription to their channel.

So, it's like a best-of the day?
I'll give it a whirl, might get me back into the show; I can do 56 minutes a day

So when did this eyebrow shaving take place? This week, yesterday?
May 10 (last Friday).

Opie & Anthony, Bob Kelly, May 10, 2013

Today on O&A, we start the show talking about Religion vs. Science, Dr. Steve calls in and we get an update on the O&A Podcast. Anthony tells us about his previous relationships, the Boston Budweiser Girls, and we discuss Intern Allen’s last day.
It’s Intern Alen’s last day we shave his eyebrows and Bob Kelly draws new ones in. Bob Saget calls in to discuss his new comedy tour.
Finally, Sam Hosts After O&A Live and is joined in studio by Bob Kelly and DJ Whoo Kid. [Original Broadcast Date: May 10, 2013]

So there's no reason to listen to this if you catch every episode that week... correct?

I thought at one point Opie said they might throw in old bits, but not sure if that is actually happening.

Opie's not doing the work to put the podcast together. So it's likely whatever Sam wants to put on the Podcast. I'm predicting it'll be a Worst-Of-the-Week type novelty item.

I will say that the actual podcast had better choices than that Buzz Aldrin laden placeholder.

I understand what they're trying to do, but it comes off as a clipped together commercial for Sirius. What they can't seem to understand (or can't get Sirius to sign off on) is that those kind of "promo podcasts" RARELY catch on. The best podcasts are original content. The fact that they can't (or won't or aren't allowed to) do ONE additional hour that's just for the podcast kind of makes them look insincere in this new media. Podcasts aren't a dumping ground for old content. The most popular shows are unique and exclusive to the podcast medium.

Just listened to the 1st show. Skipped thru most of it. Maybe this is gold to new listeners, I hope for their sakes it is.

They said they would be doing an exclusive bit for it every week. That's all you can really expect, they are going to be mainly using it to promote the lucrative radio gig. Expecting anything else is silly.

Ultimately they will fail to move the needle and not overturn The Nerdist or some shit as the #1 podcast. Then Opie will whine that management didn't support it. Criteria for success: rehash old material in a new medium the get pissed when rehashed material fails to get attention in said medium. At least they'll have something relatively new to rant about on the lucrative gig.

I wonder why you want to see them fail at this so badly.

I actually don't; I want them to get their energy back and do great radio again! But I've been thru where they are right now; when you are at a point when you know you have no support from those above you, you start dogging it at work.
They are at a trade-off point: work for their passions and give up the lucrative gig or work for the cash and be lazy. They sign contract after contract yet settle for the same bullshit every time? There are NO lucrative options left in radio so they need to take responsibility, grow a pair and do it for themselves. OR just take the cash and stop WHINING about how "badly" they're treated.

I don't see why they can't just do the show from Anthony's home studio (Or somewhere else) and license it to Sirius. They'd probably take a fuckload less money but they'd gain a LOT more control of how the show is made. You know, like how Louis CK does his TV show? But they'd need PASSION to do that.

This is a personal axe to grind on my part; I went thru it at my old job. They laid me off two years ago and instead of taking another bullshit job with a similar company I started my own. I make a WHOLE LOT LESS money than I used to, but I'm much happier. And I haven't changed my lifestyle ONE BIT since; I don't have cable anymore because they're fuck-holes. Other than that, I live pretty much the same but I'm in control of what I do and regained the passion for my career. it's a scary proposition, but at least the work product is better, which make my work more valuable!
I still hope one day the "can't miss a minute" quality of this radio show will return.

Might get you back into the show ? Did you stop listening ? I ask this because i have run into a lot of people on facebook that quit listening because of Sam. Wasnt sure if that was your reason or not. Im very close to cancelling xm because of Sam. The OJ bit today had him right alongside Ant doing OJ. When did it become the Opie and Samthony show ?

Ive always hated him. He is ruining the show. I blame Opie. He isnt this wunderkind boy. He is a glorified intern who doesnt belong on radio. But it doesnt matter, he is here to stay.

I only run into people who find the need to constantly complain about Sam. And its just here. Sam is fine on the show, you people just like to bitch.
