Shoplifter pulls sword at Longview store

LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) - A suspected shoplifter pulled a small sword on a security officer who tried to stop him at the same Fred Meyer store in Longview where a guard's ear was cut with a hatchet in December in another shoplifting confrontation.

Police say no one was hurt Monday and the suspect got away after pulling out an 18-inch sword.

Security staff approached the man as he was trying to leave with unpaid alcohol and boots.

The Daily News of Longview reported the incident Monday night.

Last week a 31-year-old Longview man was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the December hatchet assault.

In that incident, security guard David Sullivan confronted Adrian Jess Kramer in the parking lot as he was pushing a shopping cart of stolen merchandise. Doctors were unable to reattach the portion of his left ear that was cut off in the fight.

At his sentencing, Kramer apologized for the attack and said his only intent was a theft to support a drug habit.
