Ok so my toilet started doing this thing maybe a month or two ago where every so often maybe about once an hour the take will run water like its filling up but the bobber isn't dropping at all to cause it to fill up. And it's not the typical rubber ball bobber. It's a plastic cylinder kind

Any suggestions.

Pour food dye in the tank and see if you have water running
down into the bowl when not in use. You might have a slow
leak thru the flapper valve in the tank.

How long does it "run" for? If it's just a quick little psssht... like a couple of seconds, then it's probably a pressure valve thing. It was happening to one of my terlets too... a pressure spike in the water every once in a while would cause the valve to open for a coupla seconds and bleed pressure.

There is no adjustment... I replaced the whole doohickey(they're pretty cheap) and that took care of it.

Yup. If there's no internal water leak then the best option is just replace
the tank assembly. They're cheap and easy to replace.

Ok so it might be the pressure thing problem. Cuz it's for a few seconds 4 or 5 times an hour or so. So I could replace that par if it's necessary. How much trouble will this problem cause or is it just more annoying than anything.

More annoying then anything.
It's also gonna help contribute to higher water usage
if it continues for too long.

I've got a terlet that does this. Whatever. I might cost me like $0.50 in water a month.

It's too easy a fix to not take care of. One day you're gonna drop a log that you think flushed completely, and that will be the day the flapper doesn't reseat itself after one of these incidents. Spend a couple bucks and 15 minutes to keep from having to redo your entire bathroom and anything below it after The Great Poo Water Flood.

My water bill mysteriously tripled two months ago. I shut the water off to the basement toilet and the tank was empty in 30mins. I forgot about it til' now. I should fix that.

Like that old Bars Leak shit for car radiators ?
No, I think this is more along the line of cracking a raw egg into your hot radiator in terms of permanency.

Glen recommended a Toto toilet to me a few years back. Got it and have had zero problems from the never clogging always quiet thing.

The Japanese know their shit.

I'll have to look into that. I'm in the market for a new head.

I should call him.

Glenn Dandy shit all over my Toto toilet because I bought a one-piece.

I posted about the Toto one-piece that I bought. It's the best shitter I've ever had/used.

I am going to buy another for our other bathroom. My father just bought one because he is doing a remodel.

I will never buy any other toilet.

Only problem I had was the well-water ravaged the flush tower. I replaced it for both minimal cost and minimal time spent.

Ive had the same problem with 2 toilets in my house. Just pony up the 4 bucks for the new flapper and replace it. Just make sure that it reseats properly and you should be fine. Takes all of 2 minutes.

Not true. I have a 1 piece and that drains and the flapper didn't fix it.

The hard water has fucked up the sealing area and even a new one leaks.

I plan on replacing the turlet and installing a filter in the line feeding it.

So replace the flapper and put some CLR in the tank?

Ok this is what I will most likely end up doing but the flapper isn't like any I've seen before. It's not connected by the two rubber pieces in the rear like most. It's connected in the center by a rod that goes down into a pedestal type thing.

And now it's an issue because my water bill pretty much doubled.

Probably won't find that one at Home Depot
I've never seen that type before

Find the brand name and look it up online

I saw one of those in a hotel bathroom recently. I was kind of intrigued by the design (hey, I'm a landlord: it sometimes pays to know these things) so I looked it up. I'm sorry, I don't remember the name of the product, but I remember looking it up and seeing that there were many, many complaints about it leaking.

Apparently it's a power flush kind of system: there was mention in one of the reviews about a product demo that let you flush a bunch of golfballs down the toilet without trouble. But even updates and revisions to the system apparently don't fix the leak issue.

I wish I remembered what the product was called, but I think you can find it on the unit itself without too much trouble. At that point, you can decide whether you want to replace with the same or to ditch it all together.

My impression was that it was too much of a pain in the ass maintenance-wise, so I promptly forgot about it until now.

Is it a Champion Toilet? That is the one they advertised the golf ball thing. My wife had one of those in her old place before we got married.

They do sell those at Home Depot.
