Ok, the book isn't coming out until September, and it's only the first book of (at least) 3.

The books follow the Smith family. Mom and Dad are Aussie immigrants. Dad is a former Aussie Special Forces guy. Two teenage daughters, raised by gun nut mom and dad. And a man-made viral zombie plague hits the world very hard.

I think it's funny as hell. It's violent as hell. It is, once you accept the peculiar viral vector for the zombie plague, pretty damn realistic. No superhuman zombies, no crazy herd mentality. When zombies are trapped together, they eat each other. The zombies are essentially man-shaped animals about as bright as and with the disposition of a jackal who transmit the virus through their bites, once the initial flu-based plague burns itself out.

It's a gun nuts dream. It's a hell of a lot of fun, and it isn't even coming out in hardback for another 3 months. eARC is available from Baen's website if you want to fork out $15 for it now.

I don't have an issue with pirating most stuff, but I'm not okay with it for Baen.

Baen did things Louis CK's way before Louis did. Actually, about 15 years before Louis did. Baen puts their stuff out in DRM-free format, they make the eBooks cheaper than the dead tree versions, and they make things easy and simple. They don't fuck the consumer over. The only time they charge more than ~$6 a book is when they offer it as an eARC, at least 3 months before it's published.

I'm not going to lecture you on this (too late...), but if you're going to spend money on any digital media, Baen books is one of the outlets you should be supporting.

And Ringo is an asshole. This is the first book in the series, the others aren't going to be coming out for months or even years, and he throws short little snippets of the upcoming books up on his Facebook page. Just enough to get you salivating for the upcoming books, not enough to really feed the need.

Ringo just dropped another hint on Facebook:

Crystal City has underground shopping areas.

I always thought Crystal City would make a great zombie hunt area...

Oh, and there are hints of clearing out a golf course. I'm thinking Congressional.

Ringo also notes that by the time the 4th book comes around, the infected aren't much of a challenge any more. Dealing with uninfected doing stupid things, getting into bad situations that the protagonists have to rescue them from? Lots. Actually dealing with the infected? Not really.

Then again, it's pretty clear that in the second book the protagonists clear the Iwo Jima assault carrier and get their hands on a few Amtracks and LAV-25s. At that point, if you have the vaccine (they do) for the disease, you're just killing large groups of aggressive unarmed naked people. OTOH, if you ever had any fantasies about mowing down OWS types...

Book 2 of the Black Tide series, To Sail A Darkling Sea, just came out on Baen's website as an eARC (electronic advanced reader copy) today. $15 of lightly proofread zombie goodness.

Ringo deals with some realistic issues pretty squarely. Like what happens when 5 Marines and sailors (male) are stuck alone in a compartment with a single sailor (female) for a month or two, with no way out.

Zombie Apocalypse Moment:

So, you have a bunch of US Navy submarines with uninfected crews. They can distill their own water, but they're running out of food...

Hit a school of tuna with active sonar on full power. Scoop up the food. It's one hell of an Atkins diet, but it'll work for a while.

Why Didn't I Think Of That:

Take a standard shipping container. Set it down at the end of a pier, and open both ends. Lights and noisemakers draw infected into the land-side end, machines grind up the infected, spits the body parts out into the ocean where the sharks clean it up for you (so you don't get a build-up of zombie parts that fucks up your machine).

Simple, brutal, brilliant.

You have brought shame and dishonor to your family. Looking forward to BTR.

About 3/4ths of the way through, a new character is introduced who might just be from another John Ringo series...

If so, and if he can get in contact with his people, Wolf Squadron might just be able to pick up a company (maybe even a battalion?) of really excellent mountain infantry and clearance specialists.
