University of California, Davis Police Lt. John Pike uses pepper spray to move Occupy UC Davis protesters blocking their exit from the school's quad in Davis, Calif. in Nov. 2011.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The University of California is set to pay nearly $1 million to settle a lawsuit filed by demonstrators who were pepper-sprayed during an Occupy protest at UC Davis last fall.

UC and plaintiffs represented by the American Civil Liberties Union filed the preliminary settlement in federal court in Sacramento on Wednesday. The agreement is subject to the approval of a federal judge.

Under the proposal, UC will pay $30,000 to each of 21 plaintiffs named in the complaint and an additional $250,000 for their attorneys to split.

The settlement also calls for the UC to set aside $100,000 to pay other individuals who can prove they were arrested or pepper-sprayed during the Nov. 18, 2011, incident.

This would be justice if the guy and all the cops who let it happen had to pay and it would teach cops that they can't do these kinds of things without being punished.

Why work an entire year to get 30 grand when you can strong arm the city for a settlement because they'd rather avoid the potential bad publicity? This is America, after all.

That should cover the rent for about 3 months in that overpriced hippieville.

They made a business decision to settle. It would cost much more to defend each one individually.

And these are worthless California dollars anyway. Confederate money is worth more in that inflated state.

Yep just horrible they disobeyed a lawful order and got pepper sprayed... guess they are lucky it wasn't say 30 years ago and it would have been dogs/night sticks/fire hoses etc...

As long as it was money collected from state taxes, I say give them 10.
