Updating PSP FW

I have a PSP I bought with 1.5 FW about 3 years ago. I haven't upgraded it from that.

I bought a game the other day and I want to play it, but I can't upgrade the FW for some reason. I tried the 2.6 FW that's on the disc, I downloaded 2.71 to put on there and a universal upgrader/downgrader.

The ones I've downloaded, I've put in a PSP/GAME/UPDATE folder I've made on my memstick. I can select the FW upgrade and click on it. When I click on it, it goes black for about 5 seconds, and comes back with a screen with no words on it. This happens for every FW I try to upgrade to.

There is a X and O on the bottom of the screen. If I hit X, it brings up another blank screen with a right arrow on the side. If I hit the right dpad, i get a right and left arrow, hit right again and only a left arrow, almost like there are 3 screens I am navigating through. From here, nothing happens even when I hit buttons. The only one that works from here is the O which brings up the exit question, but there are no words. I know the exit question just from the way the screen looks.

The PSP is fully charged and plugged in.

Any ideas? I'm lost here.

make sure you agree to the licence agreement when going through those left and right menus otherwise it wont let you go any further.

FW 1.5 is well sought after by the homebrew FW people. Apparently it's before they took efforts to lock out homebrew. Just an FYI if you're looking to possibly ever sell it.

That's why i bought it . I was looking to sell it a while ago, but have gotten back into it.

That may be the screen I have with no words on it. I don't even see a licensing agreement. Are there multiple pages to it? What do you click at the end to get to the next step?

Forget about 2.6 and 2.71. What you want to do is stay at 1.5 and acquire the 3.52 m33 firmware. You will also need to download the official Sony Firmware 1.5 and 3.52 (to your PC, not the PSP) to compile the custom firmware. It may sound somewhat complicated, but it is really easy if you just follow the read me file that comes with the m33 firmware.

What is this 3.52 m33 FW and why should I want it?

It's the latest custom firmware that will allow you to run any and all "back up" games and homebrew.
I just DL'ed it. Hopefully it will upgrade. At this point, I'll upgrade to anything just to see this damn thing work.

EDIT: Well, I followed the broken english instructions:

PSP 3.52 M33 Installation

1 - If you are under official 1.50 PSP firmware, copy kxploitpatcher and kxploitpatcher% folders from "1.50only/" of this download to your "ms0:/PSP/GAME/" and use it.
2 - Once done it, or if you are under any Special/Open Edition/M33, copy M33CREATOR folder to your "ms0:/PSP/GAME" (1.50fw) or "ms0:/PSP/GAME150" (SE/OE)
3 - Download official 3.52 eboot, rename it to 352.PBP and place it on "ms0:/PSP/GAME/M33CREATOR/" or "ms0:/PSP/GAME150/M33CREATOR/"
4 - Download official 1.50 eboot, rename it to 150.PBP and place it on "ms0:/PSP/GAME/M33CREATOR/" or "ms0:/PSP/GAME150/M33CREATOR/"
5 - Go to Games/Memory Stick on your PSP, and execute "3.52 M33 CREATOR". Once finished, it will go back to the XMB.
6 - Go again to Games/Memory Stick on your PSP, and execute "3.52 M33UPDATE". You'll have to press X to agree to the installation.
7 - When finished, press X to shut down and reboot manually.
8 - Enjoy your 3.52 M33 ;)

Here is the latest update:

- Now uses 3.52!!!
- M33 NO-UMD: fixed problem with Simple 2500 Series Portable, The IQ Cube
- Fix a bug which made Go!Cam, GPS and sceKernelLoadExecVSH* not work in game mode.
- PSN downloaded PSX games support wasn't working in 3.51 M33 (didn't work in latest OE's either). Now it is working again. If an original PSN game still doesn't work, we recommend to delete files KEYS.BIN if exists, and copy the game again from ps3 to psp.

Team M33

That's not working for me either. I get "the game could not be started (80020001)" when i do step #5.

RE-EDIT: D'oh, I missed the "and use it." part at the end of #1. Damn Russkies LOL. I'll let you know if it's a success.
