So this is really strange, but I am going to hold off answering any questions along that line until after you’ve seen venom. I just… I don’t even… I don’t know how what I just saw is even possible.
Girl venom gave you a boner?

Continuing my comparison of The Predator and Venom - Olivia Munn was distractingly attractive in The Predator. Michelle Williams was distractingly ugly in Venom. I used to think she was hot or at least cute, but....yeesh.

She looks like the character but a bit older.

Age is getting the better of her compared to the Dawson Creek days.

But I still don't want to see it. I know I should, I just can't get in the headspace for it. Which is weird because I'll see most anything.

I can't recommend it as a good movie, nor can I recommend it as a bad movie. It's neither, and both. I can however recommend it to you as a weird movie - one that without the baggage of being an adaptation of a comic book you might be hailing as the bestest movie of the bestest year. And I don't know if I mean that as an insult, but I'm sure you'll take it that way when and if you ever watch it.

Three things really stood out, one of which is I guess a spoiler but not really, because it's in the trailers:
1) Michelle Williams was horrible. There aren't any words to describe how bad she was in this movie. I was told she was a good actress. So either she signed on before she saw the script, then tried to get out of it when she saw it and was unsuccessful, or she was on massive amounts of drugs.
2) As shown in the trailers, Venom beats up a bunch of cops in the movie after they try to arrest Eddie Brock. They know who he is. He is fully in his Eddie Brock persona. The movie closes with Eddie Brock walking down the street without a care in the world. There is no mention at all of why the cops aren't arresting him.
3)
The "turd in the wind" scene is the last scene of the movie. Sony literally showed the entire last scene of their movie in the fucking trailer.

Well that was one of the best comedies I’ve seen in a while. Don’t think that’s what they were going for. Will have more later.

I’ve heard Hardy wanted comedy, Fleischer wanted serious, and Williams wanted heroin.

I liked it. Granted I was tipsy. Movie moved quick despite the story change. Post credit scenes were cool. I found it to be more humorous than I expected. I hope they release a unrated cut of the film since there is allegedly around 40 mins of more footage.

On a different topic I’m actually super excited for “Into the Spider-Verse.”

Venom is at 30% with critics with a 4.6/10 score. Audiences have it rated at 89% with an 8.8/10 score. Without even looking this has to be one of the widest gaps between critics and audiences of all time. What's confusing is that it received a B+ Cinemascore, which is in line with movies like Justice League that didn't hold as well. I guess Suicide Squad got a B+ as well.

What's also confusing is that both the critics and the audience are correct in their ratings.

Just reading some of the audience reviews, the running theme does seem to be "the critics don't know what they're talking about" . But I think I'm also seeing the same guy posting the same review more than once.

The TWP guys were really trying to say same some positive things about the movie. But by the end of their review, they both wound up hating it.

TWP also mentioned that it really felt like this was a script that was written in the 90s or early 2000s and was shelved until now. It felt like it was written during the Raimi Spider-Man days, and honestly, that's what it felt like; a throwback comic book movie that would've felt more at home in a Raimi world. Why couldn't they make Eddie Brock an online reporter/blogger? Why did he have a TV crew with him? Just have like an iPhone or something. It really felt like this movie didn't realize there was a digital revolution.

I wouldn't call it as bad as Fant4stic. I found the symbiote to be way too funny for this film. Everything he said was a laugh line... "I am just as pathetic as you on my planet." "Pussy." That could've worked, but it just felt weird.

The bad guy was comically, mustache twirling evil. Again, felt like a throwback.

Also:

They SOOOO want to be in the MCU, with Jameson's son piloting the space capsule. C'mon Spidey, come on out. But like the TWP guys said, what's the point of having Spidey in there now? The whole motivation for the Symbiote and Eddie in the ocmics was because Spider-Man either rejected them or ruined their life. Now? Eh.... They've written themselves into a hole. And there WILL be a sequel since this was kind of a surprise hit.

Why the fuck was Woody Harrelson wearing that awful Ronald McDonald wig? It just looked cartoonish

@Pigdango @Bill Lehecka - I didn't read your thoughts, but I loved it. I want to listen to Jay discuss it. And I am really, really, really looking forward to HitWing it. We need to HitW it. It'll be more like an Everything Wrong With since it was filled with so many non-sensical details. That was fantastic.

To have Venom inspired by The Mask? Brilliant.

I need to delve into the set design and more of the completely odd details. Plus including half of Into The Spider-Verse (which looks great) to get it to two hours.

The editing was insane. Not even to get rid of the violence - the normal scenes were even stranger. During that first date with Eddie and Annie where they're having a goofy voice off it seemed like they cut to a different shot every line.

And speaking of love interests, how the oddly hot Dr. Skirt had far more chemistry with Eddie Brock than Annie. And I have to assume that her death was cut for the rating because it just kind of happened. I really wanted her to survive and be Dr. Ashley Kafka.

Moments like when the little girl wants to ask a question, Musk tells the people not to cut her off and never answers her question.

How the Riot symbiote remains an old Chinese lady for six months?

I couldn't tell how much of Venom's dialogue was intentionally funny and unintentionally funny.

The most anticlimactic death ever of Riot and how the rocket ship has a door that you just need to knock on to enter.

We actually had a "We're not so different you and I."

Eddie Brock not just looking in a newspaper for a job, but seeing a dishwasher job there.

The clumsy homeless woman set up.

The bodega thug holding his gun sideways.

How Annie sees him as Venom and still acts like he's crazy and imagining things.

How Dan from Veep played a guy named Dan in this, which was odd.

The horrible use of extras. Like how there are exploding drones crashing throughout San Francisco and no one acts any differently. How when Musk turns into Riot, no one notices it until he kills the guy.

So the rocket ship with it's 2 and a half minute launch announcement can just run without anybody doing anything once the countdown has started? Even without a pilot?

How Venom and Riot have the same voice?

How they missed the opportunity for Venom dog killing everyone in the elevator.

The horrible CGI.

Woody Harrelson acting like a South Park character.

There is so much.

How Musk pontificates over his theories on religion, which is great for two reasons. Not only is it Hack 101, but did they not learn anything from BvS? And on top of that it, he goes "God has abandoned us, but I promise, I will never abandon you again." Because how else to show that he's megalomaniacal -- other than every other thing he says or does? We need him comparing himself to God!

Sexy Lady Venom. Because Venom doesn't look like Brock and Riot doesn't look like Musk, so I assume that's their natural form? Especially because they look exactly alike. Except when Venom joins with Annie, he becomes not just sexy lady Venom but cartoonishly sexy. And Venom making out with Eddie Brock could have been a really good comedic moment if this had a Deadpool sense of humor, but it doesn't, so it's somewhere between a joke and not, which can describe 80% of this movie.

How Eddie doesn't seem shocked that he can break through doors or giant trees but climbing a tree is finally what gives him pause.

How strangely unfazed Dr. Dan is over this whole thing.

So the rocket is supposed to go to Venom Home World, collect a million symbiotes and return to take over the Earth. Fine. Go. See you in a few hundred years. I'll leave a note.

And is there anything more 90s/00s than both 1) a song about the movie at the end of the movie and 2) it being an Eminem song.

EDIT:

So did Tom Holland actually film a cameo that was cut, or was that just a rumor that nobody bothered to correct to build buzz around the movie?

That’s two lists, and no mention of The Predator’s “Climate Change is going to make this planet uninhabitable for the next generation, so of course aliens want to live here, and adapt to the unlivable climate using humans who won’t be able to live here!”

I was so aghast that two movies in the same month had the same absurd plot point that I think I missed half the stuff you listed. I just kept muttering “how is that even possible?!?”

The global warming thing didn't bother me because it seemed even faker here than in Predator. Every time global warming is mentioned, it seemed making fun of global warming. Mustache-Twirling Musk talks about it with the flatness of a press release only to follow that up with a livelier "then everyone will worship me! I will be king!" So I saw it as the excuse Musk gives to the public so that he can continue running his experiments and be considered a good guy with the noblest intentions, but it was never his goal at all. Even before the Symbiote. After all, what was his strategy? The "Lost in Space" scheme of finding inhabitable planets? Do you know how long that would take?

It was just a throwaway line, but it just threw me for a loop that the same throwaway line that made absolutely, positively no sense was used in both movies. And I'm not saying "librul agenda fake news", I'm saying it didn't make sense as something to bring up in movies about an alien invasion.

Don't get me wrong. I completely agree. It makes no sense in both movies in completely different ways, but I can kind of rationalize it in both in ways that still make no sense. "I'm here to stop global warming by curing cancer, launching rockets, and turning people into space mutants." But I guess it's the hacky studio trend now - "if you want to make your space movie, global warming is a space thing."

Here's another way to look at it. It's the 2010s version of hacking. They'll add it to any old sci-fi adjacent movie because it makes it seem more relevant and topical, but it's never done in a natural or realistic way. And when you have truly terribly written movies, you can sort of retcon that aspect of it into the story.

With The Predator - Sterling B. Vance said it's global warming because what the fuck does he know about The Predator? It wants to help us so he's going to vivisect him with Gary Busey? He's an idiot.

With Venom - It's Musk's sound bite. "I'm here to stop global warming." "But what about all the people you killed during clinical tests?" "Uh...this interview is over. Let my security guard with really puffy shirt escort you out."

Neither of them make a lot of sense, but if you squint enough you can do the writers' job for them. So that's why it doesn't bother me. Because it's a horrible trope made even more horrible by being used clumsily in horrible movies, which makes the trope even more fun because it shows how shitty the movies are simply by virtue of them using it.

And I think Venom is a much better HitW choice than The Predator.

See I didn't even vouch for Venom, as the first half is so slow that I thought people would have a hard time staying with it, while Predator is rapid fire stupidity from the outset.
