Yevgeny Zamyatin - We

http://www.amazon.com/dp/081297462X/?tag=wackbagcom-20

The first literary utopia. The inspiration for 1984 and Brave New World, but better than both.

Octavia Butler - Parable of the Sower

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0446675504/?tag=wackbagcom-20

Truly excellent modern sci-fi by one of the best in the business. It's a dystopia that we're close to living and a hopeful vision for the future. If this book doesn't get picked, it's still worth a read.

Vladimir Nabakov - Lolita

I don't think I need to say anything about this book to help sell it. If you've never read it, then dig in and enjoy.

Tim O'Brien - The Things They Carried

You like war stories? Here's one of the greatest. Tim O'Brien's classic collection of stories about the Vietnam War. It's both fiction and non-fiction all at once.

Raymond Carver - Where I'm Calling From

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0679722319/?tag=wackbagcom-20

A little something different here. The goal would be to read somewhere between 5-10 short stories from this amazing collection (pick them yourself). The variety of stories read could lead to some interesting discussion. Of all the selections, this one will hit closest to home for most of us. If you're wondering what Carver is like, then check out these two samples: "Bicycles, Muscles, and Cigarettes" and "A Small, Good Thing."

Pretty cool choices, I've already read Lolita but would recommend it to anyone if it doesn't win the poll.

I added the first three to my wish list. I'm leaning towards We right now. Octavia Butler didn't look like I thought she would.

She actually looks like The Butler in The Movie Formerly Called The Butler

I know what you mean. She also sounds a little Kermitty to me. There's a great interview she did with Charlie Rose.
Part 1Part 2 (start at 13 seconds)
Charlie, like most people who talk about her work, keeps trying to bring it all back to race. She does a good job of deflecting. I can't imagine being black and having everything always come back to race all the time. She must have been so annoyed by that.

DrewDown Have you read Parable of the Talents as well?

Not yet. High on the list. I am planning to read Parable of the Sower in August, regardless of which book the club chooses, to refresh my memory and then I'll dig into Parable of the Talents after that. If you've got a Kindle, Parable of the Sower is available for only 3 bucks.

Silly Kugz. You can't lose with any of these picks.

If you have questions, feel free to ask. It's not like you'll get your head ripped off in the bookclub thread. Right? ;)

So is it decided that we're going with "We"?

Didn't get a chance to vote yet or really look over the choices, but "We" has a good lead.

We is still in the lead and time is running out for Parable of the Sower. Several of you have already found or purchased We. It seems quite likely that Zamyatin's dystopian vision of Bolshevik communism will be our August book.
