Warren Buffett gives away $1.9 billion worth of stock

Billionaire Warren Buffett has handed out $1.9 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. stock as part of his plan to gradually give away most of his $44.1 billion fortune.

UPDATED: June 10, 2012; 9:13 a.m. EST

The third richest person in the world gave about 18.4 million of his company’s Class B shares, valued at $1.52 billion, to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bloomberg Businessweek reported Saturday.

Giving generous donations to the Gates Foundation, which aims to improve education and health care has become an annual tradition for Buffett, a plan initiated in 2006, according to the Associated Press.

Besides giving to his own foundation as well as his children's foundations, Buffett also gave shares worth nearly $20 million to eight unnamed charities, and 10 shares each to 15 elementary school children that were finalists in a business contest, according to the AP.

Buffett, who has long touted the obligation of the rich to share their wealth with those in need, teaches by example.

Last year, the mogul gave $1.78 billion to four charities, with the majority of it going to the Gates Foundation, according to Reuters.

But the chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is just as intent on donating as he is on motivating others to do the same.

Together with Bill Gates, Buffett has inspired 81 billionaires to join the giving pledge, an initiative that asks the mega rich to give over half of their fortunes to charity.
"Philanthropy alone cannot repair all of the social injustice in our country or the world,” Buffett wrote on the Giving Pledge's website. “It can, however, inspire good will, spark innovation and provide thought leadership.”

Great, he steals from the tax payers and gives it to charity because hes a nice old man that enjoys a treat every now and then. And Bill Gates said many times, his charity gives out vaccines to reduce the population. Steal from tax payers in bailouts, give to "charity", pay less in taxes, demand higher taxes on middle class and Anthony to pay for your bailouts, laugh and eat ice cream.

I've grown more cynical than I thought possible. All I can think is how much my life would improve and how much more of a contribution I could bring to the world if even 1/10th of that landed my way.

Instead, most of it will go to charities, many of which accomplish nothing. Go ahead, send money to such snd such medical research. It all ends up as money flushed down the drain.

Not cynical just a matter of you knowing where the money would actually go. You would make sure it makes a difference compared to this where we dont know exactly what difference it will make. I have said the same thing many times.

I've thought the same way for years. If I had a 100 million, not only would I have a very luxurious life, but I could really improve the world.

Oh and to Bill Gates - instead of giving all this money away, how about making your software cheaper, you do that and the people & corporations, & gov't that buy your software will have a lot more money to spend on other things - governments could afford to hire more teachers if they didn't have to pay so much for software.

Bill Gates hasn't worked for Microsoft since 2008 and you can upgrade to windows 8 for 40 bucks.

Warren Buffett's definitely making the case for less taxation and more voluntary charitable donations from the rich...

Gotta say, he did outline in a speech that "new vaccines and healthcare" would help lower the population which makes zero fucking sense. Maybe they're all poison, which would be plenty good for us westerners who received working vaccines.

We've tried beating this into the kirktard's head but it doesn't sink in. Overpopulation in third-world countries is what leads to more disease, starvation and other problems because there simply isn't enough resources to go around for everyone. He doesn't realize that reducing population actually benefits more people because of it.

I don't give a fuck less what this cunt Kirk thinks about anything (seriously, the puppet in the picture is so God damn enraging) but more people in general need to understand that over population is a huge problem, and one we have to deal with.

I guess you didn't hear about merck being exposed by its own scientists.
Yes... we heard about how Merck made vaccines that were less effective than they advertised and it resulted in outbreaks of disease... thus proving the need for, and benefits of, effective vaccines and effective vaccination programs.
