Newtown police prepare for protesters at soldier funeral

They might not show up. But if they do, police said they will be ready.

Members of a Kansas church known for protesting at military funerals threatened to appear Sunday at services for a local soldier killed in Afghanistan. The extra police assigned could be for nothing since the Westboro Baptist Church has recently gained a reputation for failing to make good on its threats to appear. In a press release Tuesday, Newtown Township police Chief Rick Pasqualini said he is also coordinating with surrounding police departments in the event of a “potential situation” at the wake and funeral services for U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Kenneth Elwell of Northampton.

The Pennsylvania chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders will also attend the services at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in the township. The volunteer motorcycle group attends military funerals to support families and shield them from interruptions created by protesters. On its website, Westboro Baptist Church on Saturday issued a press release titled “God Hates America & is Killing Our Troops in his Wrath.” The group also stated it will preach its “message” in “respectful, lawful proximity” at the services for Elwell, including his burial Aug. 10 at Arlington National Cemetery.

The release ended with “Thank God for IEDs” in bold letters.

Elwell, 33, a father of two and 1997 Council Rock High School graduate, was one of two soldiers killed July 17 by a roadside bomb while on patrol in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province. He had been stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, where the family recently moved from Fort Benning, Ga., after he received a promotion. His mother and siblings live in Bucks County. Through a family member, the Elwells declined comment on the Westboro Church threat. The church has gained notoriety for its belief that God is punishing America for its growing acceptance of gay rights by killing U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Recently, though, the group failed to show at funerals, as promised, for former first lady Betty Ford or Oscar-winning actress/AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor. The church’s website lists five press releases identical to the one released for Elwell threatening protests at military funerals held between Aug. 1 and Aug. 7. Two funerals held Monday were in Washington State and Texas. There were no reports of church members showing up, though. The website also lists on its picket schedule six events in Houston, Texas, and one in Wichita, Kansas, for Saturday and one event in Houston on Sunday. The Elwell funeral is not listed on the schedule.

Barry Bioni, the Pennsylvania captain of the Patriot Guard Riders, said that typically 10 to 25 volunteer riders attend military funerals, though only “occasionally” do Westboro Baptist members make an appearance. Bioni added that he suspects the Elwell funeral is not considered a “high priority” for the group, so he doubts they’ll show. “They want people there that they can agitate,” he added.

If the protesters do appear, they will be allowed in the right-of-way, but will not be allowed to obstruct vehicular or pedestrian traffic, Pasqualini said.
Buster H and I talked about this last night. We're probably going to be over there.

Remember. They are a bunch of civil rights lawyers and you aren't. Don't get too close to them lest you get caught up in a lawsuit.

My motivation for going is to show support for the family of a fallen soldier from my town and if that helps in any way lessen the impact of these WBC fuckos, even better. I expect the PD will be all over this. And I also expect there will be a large crowd of supportive citizens such as myself.

We will be joining up with the guys from the Patriot Guard. They've dealt with these assholes enough times now that they know how to squash their protest without getting in trouble themselves. I will NOT be exercising my 2nd amendment rights on this day since there is talk of a vigil at the high school and that's a criminal free zone... oh wait, gun free.

Feel free to drive by and toss a brick and/or a padlock out the window.

I'm always at work or out of town when they come here...

This is what concerns me. They're pulling this shit just to get the attention. The media just needs to ignore these fucko's, all the quicker they'll go away.

Find the guy with the loudest stereo and turn the speakers toward them: Slayer, God Hates Us All, full volume. Drown those faggots with some good old American metal. Although, it sure would be nice to have one of these handy:

Ignoring them would honestly help the most. Going there and yelling actually just makes it worse.

Maybe, but I think they derive enough pleasure from the pain they cause the families to keep going, even without media attention.

But it would just be them there, which would be shitty.
At least it wouldn't turn a funeral into a fucking circus.

PA is a long way from Kansas. I'd imagine their fundraising has taken a hit the last year or two and will concentrate on protests in the Midwest that are close enough to get to by piling into cars.

Family, friends honor the memory of fallen soldier

They had a memorial service and candlelight vigil last night at the high school. The video linked in the article shows the police escort he that the hearse had going to the funeral home - PA State police, at least three local departments, and of course the Patriot Riders.

I'm here... No sign of WBC fuckos.

As I expected, my local community did not disappoint.
